Feed: All Latest | Dangerous New Linux Exploit Gives Attackers Root Access to Countless Computers by Dan Goodin, Ars Technica AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. A newly disclosed Linux kernel vulnerability, dubbed CopyFail (CVE‑2026‑31431), enables a local privilege‑escalation that lets an unprivileged attacker obtain root on virtually any Linux distribution with a single, unmodified script. Released by security firm Theori after a brief private disclosure, the flaw resides in the kernel’s crypto API where an AEAD template copy operation overwrites adjacent memory, allowing the attacker to elevate privileges, break out of containers, compromise multi‑tenant systems, and hijack CI/CD pipelines. Although patches were quickly issued for several kernel versions (7.0, 6.19.12, 6.18.12, 6.12.85, 6.6.137, 6.1.170, 5.15.204, and 5.10.254), many distributions had not yet applied them, leaving countless desktops, servers, and cloud environments exposed. Experts warn that the exploit’s reliability surpasses earlier high‑profile kernel bugs like Dirty Pipe and Dirty Cow, and they urge all Linux users to verify that their systems incorporate the relevant fixes or follow vendor mitigation guidance. #debian has released a new Debian 13 (Trixie) kernel to fix #cve_2026_31431. If you aren't on Trixie yet, maybe a good time to upgrade? #sysadmin #homelab #linux

@bug_elseif@bolha.us uma meia de tux? Que legal! Eu estou atrás de uma camiseta do #Debian. Será que alguem que foi na debconf de Campinas me arruma uma?

MX Linux is a fine debian derivative with a dev by the name anticapitalista on the core team. Anticapitalista runs another debian derivative antiX which they brand officially as anti-fascist. Just saying if your looking for #Debian or #Ubuntu alternatives, or distros where systemd is optional they might be worth checking out.

@FediFollows@social.growyourown.services you ought to include the contacts of #opensource champions like the #developers of #linux #distros like #mxlinux #linuxMint #debian #archlinux, #developers of some prime #mastodon instances, #piefed instances, #codeberg , #github and email services like #mailo and #proton. That way, we would be able to reach out to them through #socialmedia whenever we need their support. This informal channel is oftentimes better than your regular email.

As an former Ubuntu fan boy, for well over a decade, I second the recommendation of MXlinux over Ubuntu. Lighter weight and Debian base is great. It is also friendly to Linux newbies with helpful tools, community and documentation. I use Devuan on many of my computers, which is also based on Debian. #Linux #Debian #Devuan #mxLinux

For Linux newbies, the Debian installer may be a bit challenging (at least it used to be). So mxLinux wins there. The Devuan installers are also not Linux newbie friendly, but I really like the TUI based Devuan Server installer and then choose a desktop environment as one of the last steps. I chose Devuan because I am interested in not having SystemD. Debian is also good, but for ease of use and installation I would usually recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition to a Linux Newbie would wants to run Debian. So I am guessing the reason is that some Debian derivatives have an an installer that is easier to use and understand than Debian itself. #Debian #LMDE #Devuan #mxLinux

#CaliforniaLaw is written by people who are either very ignorant or very incompetent. https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billStatusClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB1043 They have assumed that all operating systems are like Microsoft Windows 11, Android, or iOS; and have written legislation for operating systems where people download glorified WWW client 'apps', from 'stores', which use 'accounts' that they have with vendors or Microsoft/Google/Apple. But the legislation *as worded* *also* covers everything from #Debian and #Ubuntu through #Arch Linux and #MobaXTerm to #FreeBSD and #NetBSD and #OpenBSD; where users anonymously use package managers or ports systems to install applications, written by developers, on operating systems, from 'publicly available internet website' repositories. There is no age field in the GECOS data in master.passwd(5) of course, and the reality is that no BSD or Linux-based operating system has this concept of apps/stores/accounts. #MidnightBSD #FreeSoftware #Unix #California #USLaw #AgeVerification #GDPR

#GnometoPlasma #Linux #GNULinux #Debian #LLMs #KDEPlasma

@pointlessone@status.pointless.one I have a hard time builing #AdaLang LSP on #OpenBSD. It makes me want to abandon the whole "switch to #BSD" idea and stick to the old boring #Debian Stable...

@geerlingguy@mastodon.social so true. I’ve been running a #Debian firewall with iptables for the better part of a decade and it’s worked incredibly well. Basically any computer that can boot Linux will work. I even used a USB Ethernet dongle for a while.

Sigo feliz!

Reminder that we wrote software like #vi #linuxKernel #postgres #sqlite and such without #ai and that I still can't believe how quick, efficient #postgres is on a smoll #debian #lxc #container with two #vcpu and four GB of #RAM running on an old Intel #i5 four cores CPU and an #hdd
