OpenBSD update issues I've had are resolved! Thank you to everyone who gave me things to try to resolve my #OpenBSD Dell Optiplex 3080 i5 not wanting to boot /bsd but would only boot /bsd.sp and bsd.rd I tried everything from booting bsd.rd and upgrading to using doas sysupgrade -s but each upgrade failed the same. I even deleted /bsd so it remade it after an upgrade but still the same. Finally after thinking the next step was to do a fresh install I decided to try rolling back the snapshot to the 1st May. This is not recommended but what had I to lose ? So i entered doas sysupgrade -sf http://ftp.hostserver.de/archive/2026-05-01-0105/ and guess what ? It only boots into /bsdnow and I have all my CPU's back ! Yipee ! 🎉 Now to see if a doas sysupgrade -s does it's stuff and still boots /bsd` #RunBSD :openbsd:

Ok so I've found this log file when my #OpenBSD fails to boot /bsd but boots /bsd.booted or /bsd.sp I've not mentioned in mailing lists yet as hoping someone shouts "Haha you Muppet! Fix it like this" 😜

SeaweedFS and Garage (v2.2.0) seems to build on OpenBSD. Interesting 🧐 RustFS not so much #SeaweedFS #Garage #OpenBSD

@BastilleBSD@fosstodon.org I think the #FreeBSD project/core team need to look at improving how the ports team interact with the community and be on top of the portfolio more, especially in light of the influx of Linux users escaping the hellscape occurring over there. I don't buy the whole, "we have limited resources" as I have seen gate-keeping at its finest. Personally I have proposed and provided patches the correct documented way that sat in the bug tracker for almost 2.5 years, with no way to escalate or get them committed, so I had to carry them myself until someone with some clout was able to get something done. This should not happen. My experience with #OpenBSD is polar opposite, propose a patch, post it in ports@, gets reviewed and it is in the tree in a couple of days. If the maintainer doesn't respond, someone else does it. No ifs, no buts, stuff happens and things move forward. I'd like to point out that the above case with FreeBSD ports is not a reflection on the rest of the project. The team that work on base, kernel and security/errata are very receptive, are easy to communicate with don't leave users out to dry when issues arise. cc: @dch@bsd.network

@pertho@mastodon.bsd.cafe @oxy@social.bsdlab.au A few of us were having a discussion about it when 2.4 came out. If the time comes, it is the line in the sand but I have faith in the #OpenBSD porters that they'll keep supporting 2.3 as long is it is possible. New is not necessarily better.

Slides from Florian Obser (florian@)'s talk "Let's find out how to get predictable IPv6 addresses assigned to #OpenBSD VMs" yesterday at @bsd_nl@mastodon.bsd.cafe "Early 2026" conference. https://www.openbsd.org/papers/bsdnl2026-predictable-ipv6.pdf https://events.bsdnl.nl/early2026/talk/W9P9RT/ Video is up on their Exquisite.tube channel! :flan_thumbs:@bsdnlconference

Friendly reminder for #OpenBSD -current users, you'll need to use 'pkg_add -Dsnap ...' with upcoming snapshots as the project enters release mode for 7.9. The -beta tag has been dropped. :flan_thumbs:https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=177610362824141&w=2

Heads up: #OpenBSD snapshots that are rolling out now for some architectures (e.g: amd64) are post-7.9 release, -current development has resumed, be aware. :flan_hacker: If you sysupgrade -s now, downgrading to the 7.9 release when it releases later this month, is NOT supported. :flan_thumbs:

Various #FOSS OS communities' reactions to joining them: #Linux: "Hey, welcome to the fam! Here's a stack of CDs I burned, see which one boots for you." #FreeBSD: "Hey, we're glad you're here! Here's an amazing handbook to get you started, holler if you need a hand!" #NetBSD: "Of course it runs NetBSD! Welcome! :D" #OpenBSD: "Don't expect a lot of hand-holding, but we're all having fun with it, and hopefully you will enjoy the process, too." #9front: "Are... you... sure you want to do this?" 😆 (For the record, I love them all. I only regret I haven't had much of a chance to play with #Haiku, or interact with that community, yet!)

If any of my work on #OpenBSD, or my highlight posts here (or elsewhere) has been helpful in the past, a small recurring monthly donation would be extremely appreciated. :flan_heart:https://brynet.ca/wallofpizza.html https://bsd.network/@brynet/114458997143046937

Just about every consumer facing operating system, search engine and service is using AI now to some extent. I’ve seen folks switching to #openbsd from Linux/Mac/Windows…but what about other services? Proton has AI, and damn near every internet search engine has AI, even the ones that claim to be private and secure. I’d be interested in hearing some realistic tech stacks and workflows that don’t involve tools with AI in them or created with the help of AI. If you are willing to share please comment. #ai #noai #linux #macos #windows

@cienmilojos@infosec.exchange I don't know of any OS that has an iron-clad #NoAI policy. #NetBSD comes the closest, but they even have a provision for AI being included "with permission," IIRC. #OpenBSD already has slop in base, via tmux. :/

The #OpenBSD ports tree for the 7.9 release is unlocked. If you are a porter, you can get back to committing to -current for the next release (8.0). If you are a user, not long now, the builders are busy baking your 7.9 release.

Happy to share that #BoxyBSD remains up! Recently I got asked about my @BoxyBSD@mastodon.bsd.cafe project, which offers free VPS instances of vary #BSD based systems for learning and educational purposes and I'm happy to share that this projects remains available. Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve. But not only that! We could also get some more new resources and locations to scale and this also brings up another new project for #free Linux #VPS instances at https://boxedtux.com (Fedi: @BoxedTux@mastodon.social) where people will be able to learn and practice on different #Linux based distributions (e.g., #Debian, #Ubuntu, #Rocky,...). BoxedTux utilizes #Proxmox clusters as a foundation. Hope you like this small update... Over & out! #freeVPS #VPS #VM #Hosting #education #learning #learningplatform #service #opensource #BoxedTux

The #eurobsdcon 2026 Call for Papers is still open! https://2026.eurobsdcon.org/cfp/ Submit by June 20th, come to Brussels September 9-13 and mingle with #BSD people! We also offer pre-submission guidance/mentoring, see the CFP text. Wonder what BSD and the conferences are about? As it's a slow Friday morning, I'm watching this video from Linux Renaissance on how easy it is to install #OpenBSD. And yes, I'm wearing my OpenBSD 7.6 T-shirt this Friday. :flan_cool::puffer::runbsdBg:https://watch.linuxrenaissance.com/w/vwUQ9YZQNjNWfQqLv3LBiD #BSD #RunBSD
