One of the few #sysadmin things that worries me any more is updating boot code after a zpool upgrade. #FreeBSD I'm sure it'll be fine, but if I disappear forever you know what happened.

@BastilleBSD@fosstodon.org I think the #FreeBSD project/core team need to look at improving how the ports team interact with the community and be on top of the portfolio more, especially in light of the influx of Linux users escaping the hellscape occurring over there. I don't buy the whole, "we have limited resources" as I have seen gate-keeping at its finest. Personally I have proposed and provided patches the correct documented way that sat in the bug tracker for almost 2.5 years, with no way to escalate or get them committed, so I had to carry them myself until someone with some clout was able to get something done. This should not happen. My experience with #OpenBSD is polar opposite, propose a patch, post it in ports@, gets reviewed and it is in the tree in a couple of days. If the maintainer doesn't respond, someone else does it. No ifs, no buts, stuff happens and things move forward. I'd like to point out that the above case with FreeBSD ports is not a reflection on the rest of the project. The team that work on base, kernel and security/errata are very receptive, are easy to communicate with don't leave users out to dry when issues arise. cc: @dch@bsd.network

Various #FOSS OS communities' reactions to joining them: #Linux: "Hey, welcome to the fam! Here's a stack of CDs I burned, see which one boots for you." #FreeBSD: "Hey, we're glad you're here! Here's an amazing handbook to get you started, holler if you need a hand!" #NetBSD: "Of course it runs NetBSD! Welcome! :D" #OpenBSD: "Don't expect a lot of hand-holding, but we're all having fun with it, and hopefully you will enjoy the process, too." #9front: "Are... you... sure you want to do this?" 😆 (For the record, I love them all. I only regret I haven't had much of a chance to play with #Haiku, or interact with that community, yet!)

Updated post!

I like to install keychain to manage my SSH keys. When logging in for the first time after boot, it prompts me for the passphrase to unlock my key, then will maintain a single ssh-agent process across multiple login sessions.

Added a note about setting up keychain to launch at login for the fish shell.

This I learned: the #FreeBSD-toolchain base package is not a toolchain to build world and kernel with.

Let’s put the #FreeBSD patch levels right on the list of supported versions. Don’t force newbie to go looking at security announcements to know what patch level they should have. here’s a starting point courtesy RWP: git ls-remote https://git.freebsd.org/src.git | grep -F refs/tags/release/14.4

Happy to share that #BoxyBSD remains up! Recently I got asked about my @BoxyBSD@mastodon.bsd.cafe project, which offers free VPS instances of vary #BSD based systems for learning and educational purposes and I'm happy to share that this projects remains available. Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve. But not only that! We could also get some more new resources and locations to scale and this also brings up another new project for #free Linux #VPS instances at https://boxedtux.com (Fedi: @BoxedTux@mastodon.social) where people will be able to learn and practice on different #Linux based distributions (e.g., #Debian, #Ubuntu, #Rocky,...). BoxedTux utilizes #Proxmox clusters as a foundation. Hope you like this small update... Over & out! #freeVPS #VPS #VM #Hosting #education #learning #learningplatform #service #opensource #BoxedTux

CMD+Tab changes windows CMD+~ changes same app windows CMD+m minimizes CMD+w closes single windows CMD+q closes apps Now #BSD WM looks and feels pretty close to macOS so switching from Mac to PC doesn’t hurt anymore. And everything works blazing fast! Faster than macOS on MacBook Pro M1 Pro. I’m impressed with results. #FreeBSD

On #OpenBSD, the update process every six months is: # sysupgrade # sysmerge And as needed: # syspatch # pkg_add -u What are these processes for #FreeBSD?

https://bgp.tools/as/201379#connectivity 6 Upstreams, 105 direct peers 🙂 My AS201379 / 2a06:9801:1c::/48 has some really solid European connectivity now.
