#floss #networking I need to replace a couple of old network switches.

Are there any companies doing open source switch hardware and software? I would like to tinker.

  • 1U
  • 12 or more10G fiber ports
  • a couple of faster uplinks would be nice
  • decent RESTish API or ansible support

Something like https://vyos.io #vyos seems suitable but it looks like I would have to diy my own hardware

Do you use the Reticulum network? If so what have you learned you'd like to transmit to newcomers? To me it feels like re-learning networking on completely different bases. It almost feels like the opposite of TCP/IP based networks somehow... To anyone curious i'd strongly recommend reading https://reticulum.network/manual/zen.html #reticulum #mesh #zen #networking #acentral

And speaking of #networking I’m kinda baffled that copper 10G is bloody expensive. I have lab and studio with 10G net and hoping to get past 1G on my WAN. L2 is relatively cheap: you can get 4×10G Mikrotik CRS304-4GX for €150-ish. But L3? How about building x86 router from server scraps in this economy? Grrrh.

https://bgp.tools/as/201379#connectivity 6 Upstreams, 105 direct peers 🙂 My AS201379 / 2a06:9801:1c::/48 has some really solid European connectivity now. Entirely powered by FreeBSD and FRRouting, no proprietary routers and no legacy-IP (formerly known as IPv4). #bgp #networking #bgp #freebsd #frr #ipv6

Twenty-five years ago today, on 28 April 2001, we tested our TCP/IP over avian carriers (RFC1149) implementation. See "The implementation of the Carrier Pigeon Internet Protocol, RFC1149, 25 years later", https://nxdomain.no/~peter/rfc1149_implementation_25_years_later.html #networking #tcpip #carrierpigeon #rfc1149 #25years
