fellow #mastoadmin s in the fediverse: If anyone is using lego for generating ACME certificates, there was a major release to v5 a couple of days ago. On our system (Arch Linux) it updated automatically to the newer version, so depending on your installation, you might want to check whether your certificate renewal jobs still work as expected. ^^'

We just upgraded our Mastodon fork on Mementomori.social to Mastodon 4.6.0 theme variations.

Mastodon Bird UI is now at 4.0.0-alpha.8.rc with support for Color scheme and Contrast settings.

New settings in Settings → Preferences → Appearance:

Use stars instead of hearts for favourites
Hide Translate links on Finnish posts
Hide all Translate links

These used to be separate themes; now you can mix and match.

The Theme dropdown is shorter for the same reason: Light, Dark and Contrast moved into Mastodon’s own radios just below the dropdown. If your previous theme is gone, pick Mastodon Bird UI and set Color scheme + tick the new checkboxes to match what you had.

Fixes in Mastodon Bird UI:

Star icon alignment when Reduce motion is enabled
Sparkle and ring animations now fire in both motion modes
Notification colors that disappeared when your OS was light but Mastodon was set to dark

Mastodon is not going to allow colored badges anymore, but we are going to keep them in our instance. With this rate of deprecation, we can expect even more forks, but that's OK. We’ve successfully upgraded our Mastodon server to v4.6.0-alpha.7+mementomods-2026-05-02, along with Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0-alpha.7 (nightly).

This update includes today’s latest daily build with 207 new commits from upstream since mementomods-2026-04-05.

@downey@floss.social You're taking my suggestion way too far and adding to it things that I did not say or imply. I didn't say or imply that you needed my permission to do anything. If you imagine I even implied that, you are totally mistaken. Absent a setting a poster could set when they make a post or in their profile that said their posts are set to auto purge, giving others notice that their interactions will result in phantom, orphaned replies and interactions, I said it would be nice if users who interact with posts that get deleted have a UI panel listing their now orphan replies (implying that they could delete those phantom replies that now have no context.) I can have my social media interaction wish list and consent 101 would seem to include if you are going to have a conversation with someone, the other person has a right to know how that conversation may be used. My wish list said "I think one option to be fair would be to create a post setting that marks a post with an icon or something warning people that it is subject to auto purging, giving people advance notice who then can decide to interact or not" #mastoadmin #FediAdmin I'm muting this conversation since it appears to be escalated to no fault of my own

I am really liking my own personal server. I created it earlier today. I came up with the domain because I love the Fediverse and the open web. The Fediverse gets better when more instances pop up on around the world. I see why people may want to auto purge posts on Mastodon but that is unfair to people who reply or quote post, which leaves orphan replies and interactions with no context. It also leaves database entries and media that may come with interactions on servers. I think one option to be fair would be to create a post setting that marks a post with an icon or something warning people that it is subject to auto purging, giving people advance notice who then can decide to interact or not Post not made with the auto purge option can still be deleted but must be deleted manually. It would be great if manually deleted posts had a user panel that users could see and then manage their orphaned interactions. #MastoAdmin #Moderation #Mastodon #MastoDev

So I have a weird problem with my #SelfHosted Masotdon/Glitchsoc instance: when I log in from my PC I get the ‘Something went wrong on our end’ pachyderm smashing on keyboard error. I’ve tried a clean install (of the client system), Firefox, Edge, Chrome. Client access through Ivory is unaffected as is accessing it with Safari on my iPad. I’ve tried regenerating my secrets keys. Re-running the database migration. No joy. It’s a single-user instance running with #Yunohost. #MastoAdmin

We're adding mastodon.cloud to our #Fediblock list due to the instance seemingly being abandoned with open signups and zero moderation. The burden of us suspending accounts locally is not practical when the instance is out of date and not being maintained.
