Do you want to run your own Minecraft server but hate Microsoft? You might want to try the free open source alternative Luanti (formerly known as Minetest): 🌱 https://www.luanti.org It has many different game modes, thousands of mods, online multiplayer support, a scripting language to create your own game modes and mods, and a FOSS community supporting the software. You can follow the official account at: 🌱 @Luanti@floss.social #SelfHosting #Luanti #FOSS #Minecraft #Alternatives

Neil: There's a wealth of amazing Free software out there! I use loads of it. Them: What do you use to write documents? Me: I use vim. I write in Markdown, then convert it. (typst + pandoc) Them: What about presentations? Me: I use vim. I write in Markdown, then convert it. (revealjs) Them: Your website? Blog? Me: I use vim. I write in Markdown, then convert it. So I decided to create a self hosted search engine on my NAS. Turns out its not as difficult as you might think. I also get to opt out of who I use in my search engine. And best of all I own my own data. So what do we think? I'll just keep it private of course on my internal network. I'll access it via tail-scale remotely. #SearXNG #SelfHosted #FOSS #Privacy #Homelab #TrueNAS #Tailscale #OpenSource #DegoogleYourself

Various #FOSS OS communities' reactions to joining them: #Linux: "Hey, welcome to the fam! Here's a stack of CDs I burned, see which one boots for you." #FreeBSD: "Hey, we're glad you're here! Here's an amazing handbook to get you started, holler if you need a hand!" #NetBSD: "Of course it runs NetBSD! Welcome! :D" #OpenBSD: "Don't expect a lot of hand-holding, but we're all having fun with it, and hopefully you will enjoy the process, too." #9front: "Are... you... sure you want to do this?" 😆 (For the record, I love them all. I only regret I haven't had much of a chance to play with #Haiku, or interact with that community, yet!)

Open question, what (if any) #FOSS #database solutions are there? Doesn't need to be "production quality", I just want it for a proof-of-concept project. Bonus points if it runs on both Linux and Windows and plays nice with #Python

A question for those of you who are savvy: Is there an European SUPL? If not, why not? It seems that even the major mobile operators redirect to Google, which then has access not only to SIM card information, but also exact location of all the mobile devices in the world. If this is the case, why isn't the EU ahead of the game? Any observatory with a server could do this simple job. #FOSS #opensource #palantir #google #Linux #android #AOSP #masssurveillance #EU

#LibreOffice isn't just software – it's a worldwide community of people working on design, documentation, marketing, localisation and other topics. And you can meet us at local events! We were at the Augsburger Linux-Infotag on Saturday: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2026/05/06/libreoffice-at-the-augsburger-linux-infotag-2026/ #foss #openSource #freesoftware

The #AppImage "packaging" approach being embraced by many projects is just another poor approach. It does not really solve what it is expected to should solve: Dependency issues. More and more .AppImage downloads now produce results like these: /tmp/.mount_tumpa-Z5HMuu/usr/python/bin/python3: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypt.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory /tmp/.mount_activiXYBUA0/aw-qt: symbol lookup error: /tmp/.mount_activiXYBUA0/libQt6WaylandClient.so.6: undefined symbol: wl_proxy_marshal_flags I dunno if it is due to incorrect packaging or a design artefact with AppImage. I believe #flatpak is the only true sane way to go. At least if you don't want to frustrate users. #linux #foss #opensource #packaging

#android #foss #maps Any lightweight app where I can download maps from open street maps, put markers for myself (basically bookmarks) AND automatically back them up or sync them to some place remote? #OrganicMaps only allows manual backups it seems 🤔

I wonder if there's a software business model where you buy the software for the binary and the source code? The source code is not exactly open, but is available on that specific version. I'm also wondering how that would work for the software supply chain. 🤔 #Software #business #foss #oss #intelectualProperty #sourcecode #development #developers #SoftwareSupplyChain

My mission this week is to fix the .deb package building for the MXE project. This is no small feat because it is a cross-compiling toolchain that compiles hundreds of packages and makes hundreds of .deb files as a result. I suspect the issue to be in the packaging scripts for binutils, or possibly in the upstream build scripts. It's going to be a grind, but that's what it takes to track these things down and get them fixed. 💪 #FOSS #OpenSource

Signal is developing a standalone desktop app without requiring a smartphone for setup or use, based on recent open-source code changes. 🖥️ The update adds more desktop controls while keeping end-to-end encryption, improving device independence with a privacy-first design. 🔐 @signalapp@mastodon.world 🔗 https://aboutsignal.com/news/signal-desktop-without-a-mobile-phone-standalone-version-in-development/ #TechNews #Signal #Messaging #Privacy #E2EE #Encryption #EndToEndEncryption #OpenSource #FOSS #Cybersecurity #Security #Data #Internet #Freedom #Software #Tech #Communication
