Starting September 2026, Google will require every Android app developer to register centrally, provide government ID, and submit signing key evidence. Apps from unregistered developers will be blocked on all certified devices worldwide. This threatens F-Droid, open-source distribution, and user autonomy. @keepandroidopen@techhub.social #KeepAndroidOpen https://keepandroidopen.org --- #android, #google @reilyhs_microblog_mirror@piefed.blahaj.zone

US Top News and Analysis | What you need to know about Nvidia competitor Cerebras after wild IPO AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Cerebras Systems’ blockbuster IPO, which closed with a market cap just under $100 billion, underscores the exploding demand for AI chips that can serve as alternatives to Nvidia’s GPUs. The Silicon Valley firm builds massive custom ASICs—its WSE‑3 chip is the size of a dinner plate, about 57 times larger than the biggest GPU and contains roughly 50 times more transistors—designed for faster inference rather than the training tasks that Nvidia’s general‑purpose GPUs excel at. After the IPO, Cerebras began operating its chips inside its own data‑center cloud, positioning itself against hyperscalers and other ASIC specialists such as Groq, SambaNova, D‑Matrix and Rebellions. The offering made two of its co‑founders billionaires and paves the way for further ASIC‑focused startups to go public as the AI hardware market rapidly expands. "A new class action lawsuit accuses OpenAI of sharing data including user chat queries and personal identifying information like emails and user IDs with the tech giants — and targeted advertising behemoths — Meta and Google, without obtaining proper user consent. Filed yesterday in California, the lawsuit claims that OpenAI’s data-sharing with Google and Meta violates the California Invasion of Privacy Act, known as CIPA, as well as the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. It points specifically to OpenAI’s integrations with Meta Pixel and Google Analytics, which are data-tracking and collection tools that facilitate targeted advertisements. The data-tracking model described in the lawsuit — often referred to as “surveillance capitalism” — is the business that the modern internet is built on today. And OpenAI, like countless other tech companies, does include language in its privacy policy noting that it does collect, store, and share a range of consumer inputs and personal information." https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/openai-personal-information-meta-google #AI #GenerativeAI #OpenAI #Surveillance #Meta #Google #DataProtection #Privacy

BBC News | Why big tech is betting on cute mascots AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Big tech companies are reviving cartoon mascots to humanize their brands and deepen customer connections. Microsoft introduced “Mico,” a friendly blob avatar for its Copilot AI, while Apple’s blue‑and‑white “Little Finder Guy” appears in promotional videos for its laptops. Experts note that mascots can boost market share and create lasting, warm brand associations, especially when they tap into innate responses to baby‑like features such as large heads and big eyes. Tech giants like Google, Reddit, Mozilla, and Duolingo have also refreshed existing characters or launched new ones, using them to personalize AI interactions and drive social‑media engagement. Critics, however, warn that the trend coincides with rising mistrust of tech firms and raises concerns about persuasive, one‑to‑one AI communication that could feel “creepy.” Despite this, companies report encouraging feedback, and the resurgence of mascots—now extending beyond tech to publishers like Penguin—suggests brands see them as effective tools for building familiarity and loyalty, even as some consumers remain skeptical of their appeal. BBC News | Why big tech is betting on cute mascots AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Big tech firms are reviving cute cartoon mascots to humanise their brands, with Microsoft unveiling “Mico” for its Copilot AI and Apple introducing the unofficial “Little Finder Guy” for its new laptop. Marketing experts say such characters can boost market‑share growth and create lasting emotional bonds by giving cold, impersonal services a friendly, baby‑like face, a tactic now also being used by Google, Mozilla, Duolingo, Penguin and others. While companies tout the mascots’ expressive, customizable qualities and allow users to turn them off, scholars caution that marrying AI with cuddly avatars may manipulate consumers and heighten mistrust, even as the strategy reflects a broader push for warmth and familiarity amid growing consumer cynicism. Chicago Sun-Times - All | ComEd electric customers brace for double-digit spike in bills by Brett Chase AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. ComEd electric customers in Chicago will face at least a 12 % increase in their monthly residential bills—rising from an average of $107 to $120—starting in June, as a temporary consumer‑credit tied to nuclear and renewable energy expires and AI‑driven data centers, which now number over 80 in northern Illinois with another 75 projects proposed, drive up power demand. The surge reflects both the credit’s loss and the high‑energy consumption of these facilities, which are outpacing the state’s ability to replace retiring coal plants with new wind and solar capacity. Utility officials say the rates are set by the PJM grid operator, not by ComEd, and advocates are urging that data‑center operators fund clean‑energy upgrades and greater regulatory oversight to curb further price hikes. US Top News and Analysis | Google races to put Gemini at the center of Android before Apple’s AI reboot AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Google is using its latest Android rollout to embed Gemini, its new AI model, throughout the phone, browser, car, and laptop, turning the operating system into an “intelligence system.” Ahead of the Google I/O developer conference, the company previewed Android updates that let Gemini understand screen context, move across apps, and complete multi‑step tasks such as building shopping carts, booking reservations, or generating a barbecue menu and adding ingredients to an Instacart list. The AI acts as an agent rather than a simple chatbot, but it always returns to the user for confirmation before finalizing actions, keeping the human “in the loop.” The features will debut on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Pixel devices this summer and later expand to watches, cars, glasses, and laptops, with Android Auto receiving a Gemini‑powered redesign that includes a major maps update and in‑car task assistance. Google hopes this deeper AI integration will help it compete with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Apple’s upcoming “Apple Intelligence” initiative while maintaining user control over what Gemini can see and do. Feed: All Latest | Googlebook Is Google's New AI-Powered Laptop Platform Built on Android by Julian Chokkattu AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Google has unveiled “Googlebook,” a new AI‑focused laptop platform built on Android rather than ChromeOS, aiming at the premium market while keeping Chromebooks for education and business. Announced on The Android Show, the platform—codenamed “Aluminium OS” internally—will launch this fall on devices from Dell, Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo and will support both ARM and x86 CPUs. Key features include Android 17’s generative‑AI widget creator, the “Magic Pointer” that offers contextual suggestions when you wiggle the cursor, and “adaptive apps” that allow developers to deliver desktop‑grade Android applications with deeper hardware access. The devices will sport a distinctive glowing LED “glowbar,” premium materials, and tight integration with Android phones, enabling seamless continuation of tasks across devices, though iPhone users will see limited functionality. Google emphasizes that Googlebooks complement rather than replace Chromebooks, which will continue receiving updates for years. US Top News and Analysis | OpenAI revenue chief Dresser says enterprise AI adoption is 'at a tipping point' AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, Denise Dresser, told CNBC that enterprise artificial‑intelligence adoption has reached a “tipping point,” prompting the launch of the OpenAI Deployment Company—a new venture designed to accelerate AI onboarding for businesses. The unit, announced alongside OpenAI’s acquisition of applied‑AI consulting firm Tomoro, brings roughly 150 engineers who will embed frontier AI models into clients’ workflows, working directly with users to integrate AI into back‑office applications and other processes. Backed by a partnership with 19 investment and consultancy firms—including Bain, Goldman Sachs and SoftBank—and majority‑owned by OpenAI, the Deployment Company aims to deliver AI solutions at speed and scale. Dresser’s comments come as rivals Anthropic and Google intensify competition for enterprise customers, with Anthropic recently forming its own $1.5 billion AI‑adoption fund alongside Goldman Sachs and Blackstone. Prior to joining OpenAI in December, Dresser served as CEO of Slack. US Top News and Analysis | Google says it likely thwarted effort by hacker group to use AI for 'mass exploitation event' AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Google’s Threat Intelligence Group announced it had likely stopped a “mass vulnerability exploitation” operation in which hackers employed artificial‑intelligence tools such as OpenClaw to locate and weaponise zero‑day software flaws, even devising a method to bypass two‑factor authentication. The group said it has “high confidence” it recorded the AI‑driven attack and intervened before it could be used, though it does not believe Google’s own Gemini model was involved. The report highlights a growing trend of cyber‑criminals—particularly groups linked to China and North Korea—leveraging readily available AI models to discover exploits, a concern echoed by Anthropic’s delayed rollout of its Mythos model and OpenAI’s limited preview of GPT‑5.5‑Cyber for vetted security teams. US Top News and Analysis | Alphabet's 160% rally in a year reflects value of owning 'most of the stack' in AI AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Alphabet’s shares have surged about 160 % over the past year as investors reward the company for owning “most of the AI stack”—from custom chips and models to cloud infrastructure and consumer platforms. After hours the stock briefly overtook Nvidia, and analysts now see Alphabet as a top tech pick thanks to a booming cloud backlog that jumped to roughly $462 billion (nearly doubling after its earnings report) and a massive $200 billion, five‑year Anthropic commitment that could represent over 40 % of future cloud revenue. While some warn of concentration risk—drawing parallels to Oracle’s backlog surge tied to OpenAI—others argue Google’s diversified AI assets, profitable custom silicon (TPUs), and expanding AI services (Gemini, DeepMind, Search, YouTube, Android) give it a durable advantage. The company’s market cap sits at about $4.8 trillion, second only to Nvidia, and it plans up to $190 billion in capital expenditures this year, making its ability to sustain growth and deliver on AI initiatives (e.g., at the upcoming I/O event) a key focus for investors. Well, the new Google ReCaptcha is awful, sheesh It's a QR code you have to scan with a "proper" device - aka with Google Services installed Goodbye last 10 years of phishing awareness, time to scan random QRs without a thought while you are purchasing things, woo! Seriously what were they thinking? And because it's recommended to be put in "high risk" places, people will expect them to be seen there, and so a scam/phishing QR will be so much easier to slip in. https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/identity-security/introducing-google-cloud-fraud-defense-the-next-evolution-of-recaptcha/ #google #captcha #recaptcha #phishing #infosec #cybersecurity
