BBC News | Why big tech is betting on cute mascots AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Big tech companies are reviving cartoon mascots to humanize their brands and deepen customer connections. Microsoft introduced “Mico,” a friendly blob avatar for its Copilot AI, while Apple’s blue‑and‑white “Little Finder Guy” appears in promotional videos for its laptops. Experts note that mascots can boost market share and create lasting, warm brand associations, especially when they tap into innate responses to baby‑like features such as large heads and big eyes. Tech giants like Google, Reddit, Mozilla, and Duolingo have also refreshed existing characters or launched new ones, using them to personalize AI interactions and drive social‑media engagement. Critics, however, warn that the trend coincides with rising mistrust of tech firms and raises concerns about persuasive, one‑to‑one AI communication that could feel “creepy.” Despite this, companies report encouraging feedback, and the resurgence of mascots—now extending beyond tech to publishers like Penguin—suggests brands see them as effective tools for building familiarity and loyalty, even as some consumers remain skeptical of their appeal. BBC News | Why big tech is betting on cute mascots AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Big tech firms are reviving cute cartoon mascots to humanise their brands, with Microsoft unveiling “Mico” for its Copilot AI and Apple introducing the unofficial “Little Finder Guy” for its new laptop. Marketing experts say such characters can boost market‑share growth and create lasting emotional bonds by giving cold, impersonal services a friendly, baby‑like face, a tactic now also being used by Google, Mozilla, Duolingo, Penguin and others. While companies tout the mascots’ expressive, customizable qualities and allow users to turn them off, scholars caution that marrying AI with cuddly avatars may manipulate consumers and heighten mistrust, even as the strategy reflects a broader push for warmth and familiarity amid growing consumer cynicism. The Guardian | GameStop hits the limits of credibility with $55.5bn eBay bid | Nils Pratley by Nils Pratley AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. GameStop’s audacious $55.5 billion offer to buy eBay – a bid valuing the auction site at $125 per share and funded half in cash and half by newly issued GameStop stock – was promptly dismissed by eBay’s board as “neither credible nor attractive.” The proposal, championed by CEO Ryan Cohen, harkens back to GameStop’s rise as a “meme stock” after Reddit traders forced a massive short‑squeeze that sent its share price soaring and made Cohen a cult anti‑establishment figure. However, the financing behind the deal is shaky: only $8 billion of cash is certain, while the remaining $20 billion relies on a non‑binding promise from Canadian TD Bank that hinges on GameStop obtaining an investment‑grade rating—a doubtful prospect given the leverage required. With eBay’s own shares up 50 % over the past year and no clear strategic benefit to swapping its stable currency for volatile GameStop stock, the board sees no reason to entertain the bid, even as Cohen vows to keep pressing, hinting at a possible hostile takeover attempt. Times of India | 'I came to US in 2016 on F-1 visa…': Reddit user shares personal journey to $300,000 job in viral post AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. A Reddit user recounts how they arrived in the United States in 2016 on an F‑1 visa to attend high school, initially struggling with English but leaving fluent after integrating with American friends. They continued to university, completed internships and part‑time work, and were subsequently recruited by a major “FAANG” tech company, earning a $300 K‑plus salary while contributing to cutting‑edge AI projects in Silicon Valley. Along the way they met and became engaged to an American partner, secured an H‑1B visa, sold a side‑startup to a U.S. firm, and earned admission to Stanford for a Master’s program that their employer is funding. The author portrays the U.S. as a land of opportunity for those who work hard, though some commenters question the story’s credibility amid broader concerns about immigration and visa restrictions. So decided to go engage on some Reddit threads today, and got a very strong reminder of why I've be phasing that platform out my life. Person writes a comment full of misinformation, and completely wrong assumptions, so I jump in fix their mistakes, and provide the real answer, I get downvoted, the misinformation gets upvoted.. Okay fine, here's another comment with obvious bulletin all the way through it. I decided to press on the obvious bullshit, I receive no replies but their comment gets upvoted, mine gets down... Okay Reddit echo chamber, you win, enjoy your lies and misinformation all to yourselves ☺️ #reddit #redditmigration #annoying

@kagihq@mastodon.social is often pitched as a better web search than Google search. I'm here to tell you they're so much more than that: Kagi is a better Google than Google full stop In the aughts and '10s, google used to make cool, nerdy products and features just because they were cool and nerdy. They didn't need a better reason than that. They don't really do that anymore but it was good times So here's the deal. Go to translate.kagi.com and choose "reddit speak" for the to: language. Do this in a desktop browser because you get a different UI. Thank me later This is at least as cool and internet-nerdy as peak aughts Google ever was. Don't snooze on Kagi #kagi #google #reddit

Vaikka kai tätäkin kautta onnistuisi ainakin kommentointi. Kännykkäsovelluksena selaukseen käytössä Sync ja instanssina suomalainen sopuli.xyz #lemmy #lemmyfi #reddit

Is using the n word without implying they are being inferior racist or being a pottymouth?

I have a 3 day ban over on Reddit for saying (n word, then homophobic f word). I wasn't implying anyone was inferior. Reddit lacks a rule expressly saying I can't use slurs in any context, although they have racism and homophobia banned. Was I being racist and homophobic just by mentioning the word? Here is the context: I said on /r/monkeyspaw: "Granted. Your username is now "/u/nf." uncensored. In response to "I wish I was able to change my username on reddit."
