Every now and then I like to remind people that one way to respond to the lack of alt text on images on here is to politely suggest text that can be copied. You never know if the person posting the image is dealing with physical or other challenges preventing them from writing the alt text. And some apps make this harder than others. One response to this that came up once or twice has been: then people will just be lazy and never do it themselves. Well, back to my first point, it may not just be laziness. But even then, so what? You'd be doing it for the people who rely on image descriptions, not them. #AltText #ImageDescription #accessibility #Alt4YouMeta

Ok I am truly sorry to be that guy. BUT: Can we PLEASE, leave the "#AI improves #accessibility" talks to people who actually benefit from #accessibility? I see SO MANY articles, On LinkedIn, on Slack, on Medium, about how AI improves #accessibility metrics, compliance, automates all the things. Newsflash: your metrics are likely incomplete or inconclusive, compliance is at best an illusory snapshot, and automation for #accessibility is still a pipe dream, and that's coming from someone who actually uses these tools OUTSIDE a presentation room. I don't care if you're #microsoft, #salesforce or whichever other big name that makes you feel authoritative. You're wrong, sorry to say. Want ACTUAL stories from ACTUAL people using #AI to improve #accessibility? Hire me and I'll talk your ear off. That's been me for months now. Don't want to, right before #GAAD? Welp ... that tells its own story then, doesn't it?

Want a freebie? Sure, I can do that!

  1. Can #AI improve accessibility on the web? - Yeah probably.
  2. Can it do it without supervision? - No. It almost habitually screws up the simplest of things because the training data is you lot’s semantically terrible code. :P
  3. Can it save time in making things accessible? - Yeah, provided someone competent is at the helm, see also q2.
  4. DO humans need to be in the loop? - yes, see q2.
  5. Are random big-tech officials making (generating?) 50-minute presentations to augment the echo chamber of this being a solved problem full of it? - That would be a yes.
  6. Are they actually causing harm by not actually including the audience they are claiming to help? - Absolutely, please stop f*ing doing that.
  7. Is this a terrible look near #GAAD where we need to convince others we care about #accessibility for one day of the year? - oh yeah.

Edit: Reboosting from November. Still looking for work. Thank you! So I lost my job yesterday, which means I'm looking to #GetFediHired! I've been a Senior Software Dev for ~8 years, but I've been programming for more than 20 years. I have lots of experience with C, C++, C#, Python, JS, x86 and other assembly. I've touched a lot of languages on several platforms. I have worked a bunch in simulation and robotics (ROS), open-source software, and 2D and 3D graphics. Hoping to work with interesting people on interesting projects. Diversity and accessibility are very important to me. Remote work is preferred. I am in Canada. Edit: Getting ahead of this now. No GenAI cultism please. No late-stage corpo ad-serving, data scraping, always online, crypto stuff either. Thank you in advance, I love you! :boost_requested: :boost_ok: :heart_cyber: #FediHired #RemoteWork #Accessibility

Designers are good people. Some designs exclude people anyway. Alan Dalton explains why—too much to remember—and offers a practical fix: accessibility personas that help you recognize problems while you’re designing, not after. Homework included. I know this is common knowledge, particularly for blind users, but I’m obsessed with ElevenLabs. The human-sounding voices are incredible; they've made listening to ebooks an amazing experience. Now I barely need other apps for ebooks, #Audiobooks are still my main choice, but when an audiobook is not available, or if I don't like the narrator's voice, then I always use Eleven Reader as an option. It means now I can read more and more with even a bigger pleasure. #Accessibility #Blind #Books #Bookstodon #Technology #AI

I hate to say I’m desperate, but I haven’t had work in *months*. If anyone’s looking for a #freelance senior #wordpress #developer, please keep me in mind. I do full, custom theme builds, specialize in #accessibility and #semantic code, and am a great communicator about time estimates and budgets! My full portfolio is www.amberweinberg.com If you don’t have any work, I would appreciate a boost 😊 #frontend #frontendDeveloper #development #WPJobs #needwork #hireme #hire #getfedihired

Kids (teenagers) are using computer-assisted development (Claude and others). But what they produce is weak from a system design perspective. Let's teach them about contrast, UI and usability (UX)! Better now than never. #webdev #ux #ui #design #accessibility #a11y #claude #ai #llm

The catch is this: at some point, a contractor for #SocialHousing had been sent to fix something. That person saw my strata and other unit chaos--again caused or at least *strongly* influenced by multi-years' worth of environmental issues that the landlord is NOT mitigating (notably: extreme heat and access to clear air for venting built-up heat)--and reported it to the landlord. The landlord in turn requested that I consider contacting the Hoarding Disorder Foundation of Alberta to work at reducing the amount of stuff I have in my unit. 12/x #clutter #mess #accessibility #HoardingDisorder

Now, the Hoarding Foundation of Alberta is, imnsho, great. 🙂 Prior to the beginning of the #covid19 #pandemic I had gone to their in-person support group and found some very useful strategies for dealing with what I recognised could become a significant problem. Back then, they weren't even a formal organisation yet and I'm pleased that they've come so far to provide much-needed expertise on this disorder. Check them out here! 🙂 https://www.hdfa.ca 13/x #hoarding #materials #objects #accessibility #Alberta #yeg

So there are definitely moments of confusion amd/or explanation required as to why I genuinely NEED to retain this item or that item, because this is non-obvious to the hoarding specialist. Family and friends usually know or can recognise why I have something or something is located in an odd place (as opposed to where one might expect considering the item's intended purpose), but even they sometimes might be scratching their heads over something. Aside: I just realised that if I ever have the time, perhaps adding large labels like the classic #Batman #TV series did on their #batcave gadgets would be helpful to the many who aren't able to recognise a #repurposing. 🦇 😂 17/x #disability #accessibility #mitigation #modification #alteration #repurposing

I also want to note how thankful I am for the assistance of friends and family for some of the more time-intensive decluttering and reorganising that has been done beyond what the hoarding specialist and I can reasonably accomplish in any given session. Given literally ALL of the above in this long, meandering (but ultimately cogent, I promise!) story, it is a blessing beyond description that I can be laid flat-out from #disability issues and another person be able to make progress without my direct oversight. There is still much to do, but the specialist and I have been making steady progress throughout our time together, and those more intensive periods of help with knowlegable family and friends has improved some things beyond my wildest hopes. 🙂 19/x #assistance #support #HoardingDisorder #decluttering #disability #accessibility

A specific example: A family member came to visit and even extended their stay a few days specifically to make my kitchen #accessible, as in #functional, for me. As mentioned, the kitchen has been my 'nerve-centre' for dealing with much of these past few years' cascade of #emergency issues that have been particularly hard on folks like me with no #HeatTolerance and also bonus #LungProblems during #ExtremeHeat and also #Wildfire events. Much of its floorspace was filled with the strata of attending to and doing my best to mitigate these urgent problems, even those that relate to #lease restrictions and #SocialHousing not choosing to upgrade units to meet this new reality. In many ways, this was not a big deal for me: I don't feel safe using the stove/oven (#balance and #tremour issues). My #arthritis doesn't handle preparing cold meat for microwave or toaster-oven cooking, so I eat frozen meals and graze from various pre-prepped options such as crackers. 20/x #accessibility #usability #workflow

My frozen options are limited, though. Many contain ingredients I'm outright #allergic to or my body responds poorly to. One line I used to eat frequently was discontinued on #Canada and that narrowed things down even more. And the expense! As mentioned above, the #disability pension disabled people in #Alberta rely on has not been increased since 2016. Not that this pension was ever particularly generous, but I've never felt truly food-insecure since grocery #inflation began ramping up so overtly over the past 5-6 years. My family member observed (correctly) that making food can be much cheaper and i definitely healthier than the options I presently rely on. But they also know the physical challenges I face and the implications, so they assessed the kitchen not just for #access to various parts of it, but also to rearrange for usable #workflow. 21/x #usability #organisation #accessibility

In #decluttering, we discovered I had a very good, appropriately small #RiceCooker. I hadn't used it in years, as preparing anything to eat with the rice was beyond me. (Yes, I realise many solutions to that issue probably exist, but I am and have always been genuinely NOT a good cook and it is not an area where I am likely to come up with alternatives. Figuring out stuff with wood and fasteners, no problem. Foodstuffs? No idea. Definitely NOT my skillset). Anyhow, my family member knows I love #porridge but haven't eaten it for years due to my concerns about stove #safety and #tremours. I also loathe the instant packet porridges -- I have no idea what they do to make them taste sweet but unpleasantly over-the-top sweet, but they have accomplished it, ugh. Annnnnnnd … it turns out you can use rice cookers ro cook things OTHER THAN #rice! Not a revolutionary concept to many readers, I know, but this was shockingly new information for me! 😂 22/x #MealPrep #cooking #accessibility #disability #safety

We discussed my ability (and willingness) to attempt cooking food again. My relative bought some ingredients and we had an incredible #Indian dish one night (can't recall the name, apologies!) all made in the rice cooker from start to finish. Amazing!!! ❤️ 23/x #MealPrep #FoodSecurity #Inflation #poverty #accessibility #disability
