Our local independent bookshop has a monthly ‘mystery book’ subscription. The staff have hand-crafted teeny tiny editions of each title they’ve included so far. Each book cover is a faithful rendition of the real one. Amazon could never. AI could never. #Books #Bookstodon

Looking for book recommendations. Been on a long nonfiction run. I'm tired of learning about stuff. Just need some fiction. Something creative, something neat, maybe adventure, maybe dystopia, maybe gangster with a heart of gold, maybe breaking the psyche, world traveller, bicycle mechanic, just about anything. Anyone reading anything great these days? #bookstodon #books #fedibooks #askfedi #fiction

Very much enjoying this. Past the ½-way, the story structure @cstross@wandering.shop is referencing — and references to others in the same series — is clear to the reader. This is no knock-off or parody in any manner, however; merely a pondering of “what if you put that guy in *this* situation?” It’s incredibly well-done. References to other great works — especially a mid-’30s German mesmer — are also intelligently included. This is a work of great skill. #reviews #BooksTodon #CineMastodon #LaundryFiles

I’ve just realized this is only №2 in the #LaundryFiles series. The fact that №1 has a short story/novella (depending on your definition) in addition to the novel is likely to be part of my confusion. Yet, I have already fully dedicated myself to reading all of @cstross@wandering.shop’s work in this series. It doesn’t take long for me to become obsessed, it would seem. But, damn, he’s good! #BooksTodon

Oder in anderen Worten: Well, that escalated quickly. #Bookstodon

Yes, folks, I wrote a romance novel! It's Minoan-themed (a total surprise, I'm sure 😉) and is set among the bull leaping community of ancient Crete. It's lightly spicy - apologies to those of you who were hoping for more steam. It is, however, plenty angsty and emotional, and it has the desired happy ending, because Adelphos and his new love deserve that much. For more details, and plenty of places to find it that aren't named after a South American river, go here: https://www.lauraperryauthor.com/leap-a-love-story #books #bookstodon #GayRomance #HistoricalFiction #Minoan

Ponyboy (Eliot Duncan) – I'm a sucker for atmospheric prose, and Ponyboy seemed to give prose that echoed the protagonist's own chaotic, drug scrambled perception of his world in Paris and Berlin. It can make it a confusing read at times, but I felt that very much kept you inside Ponyboy's head as he gets trapped in his cycle of drugs, booze and godawful relationship choices. For as much as I enjoyed that, I felt it was lacking enough threads in the final act to tie the themes together. On it's own, it's strong. But set against a large number of tragic and self destructive queer stories, it was hard to see this standing out and offering something beyond a final movement past hopelessness and into recovery. In many ways, that mirrors stories that stem from the personal. But for a story that can be so evocative, I felt it had more to give in this current climate than what was said on the page. #Bookstodon #Books #QueerBooks #Queer #LGBTQ #TransBooks #Trans

My #bookreview is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, and spectacular #horror #books far and wide. Illuminating, concise, and chock-full of fascinating details— with images of pages and ephemera pulled from King's personal archives— this book provides a truly unique and one-of-a-kind window into the Writing World and Words of Stephen King. An absolute joy for any Constant Reader. (Hogarth) #book #review #bookstodon #StephenKing @bookstodon@fedigroups.social #mothersuspiriareview #MSReview @bookstodon@toot.community

#onthisday Angela Carter was born on this date back in 1940. She was known for revitalising fairytales and infusing them with eroticism, making their passive heroines sexier, smarter and stronger. Carter initially emboldened other literary authors to tackle supernatural themes afresh. Her approach, duly toned down for mass consumption, became a model for the feminist-lite reinvention of other disregarded genres in print and on screen, in adult and children’s fiction – from vampire horror (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight) to SF dystopia (The Hunger Games) to Disney princesses with attitude (Frozen, Brave) playing a significant part in fantasy’s resurrection and its ascendancy in the bestseller and box office charts since the late 90s. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #onthisday #HowtoSucceed#Author #Novel

I'm reading a book of classical poems by Arab women, and found this gem from some 1000 years ago: "Leave me alone, you’re not my equal, you’re not a man of the world nor a man of faith, yet you want to own me, you mindless twit." (by Umm Ja'far bint Ali) That's it. That's the whole poem. #poetry #poem #WomensHistory #women #literature #art #bookstodon

#bookstodon @quartacapa@bibliodiversidade.club https://bibliodiversidade.club/@quartacapa/116521509668071645

Finished Septology by Jon Fosse and it was a book, I wouldn't recommend this book to my worst enemy, in fact I want to say that the emperor has no clothes, the emperor's new clothes are that he's naked, that is the emperor wears nothing, for 667 pages of this nonsense and my poor ADHD brain is now dead, and I swear anything on Goodreads book challenges is not a good read I want that time back now #Bookstodon
