Angela Carter was born on this date back in 1940.
She was known for revitalising fairytales and infusing them with eroticism, making their passive heroines sexier, smarter and stronger.
Carter initially emboldened other literary authors to tackle supernatural themes afresh.
Her approach, duly toned down for mass consumption, became a model for the feminist-lite reinvention of other disregarded genres in print and on screen, in adult and children’s fiction – from vampire horror (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight) to SF dystopia (The Hunger Games) to Disney princesses with attitude (Frozen, Brave) playing a significant part in fantasy’s resurrection and its ascendancy in the bestseller and box office charts since the late 90s.

Delia Derbyshire was born on this date back in 1937.
Her claim to fame is she was the woman who arranged an electronic realisation of Ron Grainer’s theme of the Doctor Who series in 1963. The rest, as they say, is history.
Probably one of the most well know television themes to be created and produced entirely with electronics.
Grainer attempted to credit her as co-composer but was prevented by the BBC bureaucracy because they preferred that members of the workshop remain anonymous.
She was an English musician and composer of electronic music who worked with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop during the 1960s and has been referred to as "the unsung heroine of British electronic music."

Alice Lidell was born on this date back in 1852.
This was the girl who would find fame as the eponymous heroine of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
Check out the acrostic poem from the end of the second book spelling her name out in full:

Machiavelli was born on this date back in 1469.
My anonymous Evil Criminal Mastermind in How to Succeed as a Supervillain by Following the Evil Overlord List considers him to be essential reading for all aspiring villains.
He reckons that Machiavelli’s The Art of War, and The Prince, along with General Sun Tzu’s book, also entitled The Art of War, comprise the three erudite Big Books of war, conflict, and dissent.
They’re all books which deserve to be added to the Evil Overlord’s required reading list, and he’s penned an addition to the beloved List which suggests: all those aspiring to wickedness are strongly advised to read, study, and memorise both versions of the Art of War along with The Prince and, once one has done so, read them again until you know them by heart.
Then, and only then, will you be ready to take over the world.

I nearly always include a prologue, but I mix up the ways it works to keep things fresh.
I’ve used one to introduce the character to the reader, to introduce some information the protagonist isn’t aware of, started off one book from the perspective of a character who’s more of a bystander than a participant and, in one book, thrown my protagonist straight into the action, in medias res, as it were.

Anyone ever included a prologue to a novel? I'm doing it for the first time. I never thought I'd consider it, but there's a piece of critical information about a character that needs a setup, and there's no place in the book that feels right. The old saying, "Past is prologue." totally resonates. I guess I'll see when it's published. On this day, in 1536 – Anne Boleyn, Queen of England, had the book thrown at her. She was arrested and imprisoned on charges of adultery, incest, treason and witchcraft.
From a writer’s perspective I believe most commentators have missed one important fact. Recently historians were said to have found a hidden detail in one of her portraits which was a rebuttal of the charges of witchcraft. This centres on the allegation that she’d been polydactylic (from Greek polys, many, and daktylos, finger), meaning having an extra digit, implying she was involved in witchcraft.
All in all though, it’s probably worth mentioning how unlikely it was that Henry would have married her in the first place if she’d really been in possession of a superfluous pinkie… Bleedin’ obvious when you think about it!

Happy Beltane, everybody. Today is the third festival celebrated by neopagans and other like-minded people during the Wheel of the Year.
Here’re a couple of fun facts you might not be familiar with:
Often regarded as a fire festival, people attending walk around or between bonfires and sometimes leap over the flames or embers. At this time, household fires are doused and then relit from the Beltane bonfire.
The aos sí (often referred to as spirits or fairies) are thought to be especially active at Beltane and the goal of many Beltane rituals is their appeasement. Many scholars see the aos sí as remnants of the pagan gods and nature spirits of times gone by.
At dawn or before sunrise on Beltane, maidens would roll in the dew or wash their faces with it, as morning dew was thought to bring good luck and health. It’s also thought that a man who washed his face with soap and water on Beltane will grow long whiskers on his face.

#PennedPossibilities 1001 — Is your MC confident or not? Tell us why.
Nathan, my protagonist, was born confident. In some respects you could probably describe him as being a confident trickster rather than a confidence trickster.
Vicky, his partner in crime, started off not believing in magic even though she knew her mother was a hereditary witch. When she opens up to the idea in the first book she lacks confidence in her skills and has a tendency to go at like a bull at a gate throwing fireballs around with gusto.
As she begins to become more subtle in her use of magic, so her confidence grows but I’ve got a feeling she’s going to end up being over-confident and somewhere down the line it’s going to cause her problems.

Kindle certainly doesn’t like to make it easy for authors using their services.
I’m in the process of updating the eBook version of How to Succeed as a Supervillain by Following the Evil Overlord List to the second edition. As I’ve mentioned before, whilst preparing the Amazon print edition I encountered something weird when I was using cover creator. I was forced to create a new cover as the trim size had been changed to bring it line with the Draft2Digital version but try as I might I was unable to match the original cover design which was a bit disappointing.
I’m now running into a similar problem with the eBook version as there doesn’t seem to be any facility to use the same cover for both versions. Cover creator is allowing me to produce something similar, but it won’t allow me to match the existing cover. For example, the author name comes up as TIM HAYES, all in capital letters, and it won’t let me reformat it to a mix of upper case and lower case so I can’t use Tim Hayes as on the cover of the print version. It’s hinky, inflexible, and downright frustrating to use.
