#WritersCoffeeClub May 7. Do readers need to understand a character's motivations to understand the story? So, I'm thinking of one book in particular, that was written in close 1st person, and yet the author concealed some pretty key facts about the protagonist until the very end. I felt like the author pulled a fast one on me, and didn't enjoy the experience. #Writing #Reading

#ScribesAndMakers 5/7. When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? So we (my wife and I) are booked to trade at a steampunk event on June 6th/7th. My wife said, late March this year, "the theme for the event is pirates and mermaids, we could write books". So I said "That's a good idea." The file was opened March 25th and the writing completed at 30K words on May 4th. And I'm now working on the clean-ups. Coming soon: "The Damsel and the Mermaid" The mermaid image is available as a wallpaper/screensaver for desktop, iPhone and Android https://ko-fi.com/adaddinsane/shop #writing #writingCommunity #sapphic #romantasy #3dRender #noAI #madeWithDaz #3dArt #CGI #art #fantasyRomance #wlw #humanMade #mermay

#WritersCoffeeClub 5/7. Do readers need to understand a character's motivations to understand the story? I mean, superficially, I suppose they might get away with not for the simplest stories. But generally, yes. Of course! #writing #writingCommunity

The #MastoPrompt for Wednesday 6 May 2026 is: #quirk The poem or story can include the prompt word or be about the prompt word. @ me, if you like, or just include the #MastoPrompt tag (to allow people to follow or filter their feeds), or keep your work to yourself - all the options are good as long as you're writing. If you're including an image please do include alt-text if you’re able to. #Writing #SmallPoems #Poetry #Fiction #MicroFiction #SmallStories

So here it is! https://archiveofourown.org/works/84316071?view_full_work=true It's the final book in the trilogy. Much as I love these characters, I really don't want to write any more about them because I have so much else to do! Fortunately I've managed to write them into a position where they really can't go on any more major adventures for the next few years. #writing

#ScribesAndMakers 5/6. Ghoti (fish) is a word created to demonstrate the odd pronunciation variations in the English language. Create a word of your own or share one you've created. So many. In the Patterners' World there are entire classes of creatures with "ancient names": kichek (ridable lizard thing), sikechak (bat like, comes in sizes up to f-ing enormous), nachak (like T-Rex), tekrak (rocket-propelled flying cabbage - no, really), xililik (nobody knows, used as an insult). There are rules for how the words are constructed. Most races have a name ending in "-lin" like Shocalin (otter-like), Ustecalin (ambulant fish people), Miralin (mer-folk). #writing #writingCommunity

#WritersCoffeeClub 5/6. Talk about something you've written which you expected would (_or expect will_) divide readers. Better than that, I'll give you something that absolutely does divide readers. "Wind in the East", the fourth book of the Maliha Anderson series, has a scene where she has herself strung up naked and insists her boyfriend whip her. Writing the scene wiped me out emotionally for two weeks, but it wasn't some random perversion. She had a very specific reason (well, two reasons) even if they don't necessarily bear detailed examination. Let's just say that readers either do, or do not, get past this scene. #writing #writingCommunity #3dRender #noAI #madeWithDaz #3dArt #CGI #art #humanMade

I did the final edit yesterday, so the book will be going on AO3 today (which is quite a job, because I need to go through re-setting all the italics and so on using HTML). I've also found all my old Shadowrun fanfic, so I think at least some of that will be going up there too... but probably not today. #writing

#WritersCoffeeClub 5/5. Have you ever taken inspiration from something which could have but didn't happen? Yes? Kinda? The Great War could have started April 1911, due to the Agadir Crisis where Germany tried to provoke France. In my steampunk world, it happens. Except I've never written about it. #writing #writingCommunity

So, chapter 3 requires me to pull a handful of new side characters out of the ether. I'll probably reference them again very occasionally, but this will be their main chance to shine. I know it's a bit barmy, but I like the idea of giving people I know the chance to lend me characters they're not really doing anything with. It kind of makes me feel more connect to people, and I think the characters will be more real than if I just slap some literary paint on a 2D cardboard cut out of a character... I'm just not sure how to ask people about this. I'm so terrible at social stuff. o_O #writing

  1. Have your characters ever visited other planets, asteroids, or stars? #Writephant

They spent some time on the Astral Plane, including sailing a ship to the Astral Moon.
