#ScribesAndMakers 5/8 What experience can you identify as having made you the writer you are today? Come to think of it, I spent a lot of time by myself growing up, sometime in my backyard by my basketball hoop and sometimes on secluded beach shores. I used to make up whole epic tales using the geography of wherever I was and just think about their history and timeline. That probably gave me some world-building experience from a young age.

#ScribesAndMakers 8 May: Leviathan? Wasn’t that the titles of one of the instalments of the novels of The Expanse? Cool books, though I couldn’t bring myself to finish them after watching the show… the show was already so good the books didn’t add much in my experience.

#ScribesAndMakers May 2: When you finish a project, do you tend to feel that you have everything just the way you want it, or is it more like 'good enough'? I get it to the best place I can, knowing that nothing will ever be perfect. I endeavor to be able to read it later without smacking myself up the forehead.

#ScribesAndMakers May 3: When you see the word 'read', is your first instinct to read is as present tense or past tense? Based only on how I read this prompt, I read it in the present tense absent any other context.

#ScribesAndMakers May 4: How many songs are there where you know all the lyrics by heart? I had times in my life where I knew a lot of songs' lyrics by heart. At this exact moment, I'm only reasonably sure I could make it through The Mountain Goats's This Year without referring to the lyrics.

#ScribesAndMakers May 5: Have you ever worked with collage? I'm almost certain I have. At one point, I was doing work with wheat paste and photos from a local newspaper but I don't have a strong memory of what I was doing with those. (Wheat paste has a number of uses but archival quality anything isn't on the agenda.)

#ScribesAndMakers May 7: When did you think of the idea for your current project? The only project on my plate that I haven't talked about on that line is the one currently code named The Cheating Game. I'm not really sure but the oldest entries in the project folder are from 2023. Do you remember how it came about? Not really. I'm sure it came about from the dynamic between the protagonists and an eventuality that will eventually cause them some significant issues. :blobcatgiggle: (The premise is that a married couple agree to give each other permission to 'cheat' within certain boundaries as long as they tell each other the story. In that sense, it's a bit of a frame story.)

#ScribesAndMakers May 8: Leviathan? Listen. You cannot just drop leviathan, who has ties to Lotan and Tiamat, into my prompts. That ties a concept from early Hebrew legend in with Canaanite and Mesopotamian stuff. While I'm pretty sure there's no direct connection to Fenrir, double-checking my references on Wikipedia reminded me of some elements of that figure too. I love y'all but we cannot be doing this. :blobcatgiggle: Anyway. Our great hero faces down the great beast, Leviathan. They fight to a stand still. The hero asks what Leviathan wants. Leviathan says to be left alone. The hero says "oh, shit. Sorry, dude." "Happens all the time." Leviathan swims off, thinking comparatively charitable thoughts about the hero. And then the author avoids telling a joke in poor taste involving a certain science educator and harasser of critters. (I'm not upset at all but I seriously could nerd out about this forever.)

#ScribesAndMakers When did you think of the idea for your current project? In those first delirious weeks after we moved, January 2025, the first story for “What A Charming House” was scrawled in a notebook. Just for fun, a one-off to procrastinate unpacking, while thinking of Shirley Jackson and Tom Waits. A few weeks (and stories) later, we decided to do a collection of gothic house tales.

When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? It's evolving. It came about when I started pondering "And *then* what happened?" when I finished the last one. The joy and pain of writing series. #ScribesAndMakers

#ScribesAndMakers When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? It was during the long process of getting my hearing checked out on the NHS because I had some midrange hearing loss. I played a writing prompt on bluesky which sparked the question: what would the relationship between a siren and a deaf person be like? The idea incubated, and I ended up deciding to set it in 19th century Cornwall using local sea folklore rather than Greek.

#ScribesAndMakers May 7. When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? It came about over time and as the result of the convergence of a few different ideas. One of the earliest of those was a while ago when I learned about the wood wide web and kind of imagined a different world within it. That came together with some other ideas about plants and people and the world. And then I had an idea for characters and started writing.

#ScribesAndMakers 7 May: When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? I came up with my current WIP very recently… yet it’s already a bit of a blur 😅 I do notice I have a strong tendency to want to experiment with topics and viewpoints that were underrepresented in my previous works. Child of the Moon featured four POV characters that were all male, which drove me to try a female POV with Mrs. Cleyton. But Mrs. Cleyton was a middle-aged grieving widow, so for my next WIP I want to write a younger woman who still has her drive. Also, I think female rage is a popular topic in commercial fiction, and ever since I finished Mrs. Cleyton, I think I can finally relate to it, so that’ll become an important theme too. And finally, my first two novels were rather restrained when it came to sexual scenes, which I want to open up this time around… without necessarily being labelled erotica. But despite all the experimentation, I’m also going to go back to my roots as this will become a historical prequel to Child of the Moon and set in Scotland again. It’ll be some truly horrific psychological horror 😈 PS.: I’m thinking of doing a title reveal soon. Raise your fingers if this feels like something you’d be interested in 😇

#ScribesAndMakers 7/5: When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? I cannot remember when, but certainly years ago. I used to belong to a facebook group called 'Leaving teaching: surviving and thriving beyond the classroom'. I joined it because I was interested in finding out about other jobs I might try out in my one short life. Turned out that wasn't the vibe: it was for desperate people who were contemplating driving their cars into trees...

#ScribesAndMakers 7 May: When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? My current project is to create a simulation of an imaginary 8-bit home computer from the early 1980s. I think the seeds of the idea came to me 25 years ago - I always wanted to try out some processor architecture ideas. I'm starting off with a simulated 6502, but once I have the rest of the development system and simulated hardware ready, I'm going to do some processor hackery!

#ScribesAndMakers 5/7. When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? So we (my wife and I) are booked to trade at a steampunk event on June 6th/7th. My wife said, late March this year, "the theme for the event is pirates and mermaids, we could write books". So I said "That's a good idea." The file was opened March 25th and the writing completed at 30K words on May 4th. And I'm now working on the clean-ups. Coming soon: "The Damsel and the Mermaid" The mermaid image is available as a wallpaper/screensaver for desktop, iPhone and Android https://ko-fi.com/adaddinsane/shop #writing #writingCommunity #sapphic #romantasy #3dRender #noAI #madeWithDaz #3dArt #CGI #art #fantasyRomance #wlw #humanMade #mermay

#ScribesAndMakers May 6. Ghoti (fish) is a word created to demonstrate the odd pronunciation variations in the English language. Create a word of your own or share one you've created. I've not made up a lot of words for the book, many more names, but one is 'cochon'. It's a foreign word that Savique doesn't know said by one of the people he meets early in Shadow of the Elders. It's called back later so he can know who comes to his rescue. It's only meaning is someone who works the land. The meaning isn't very important.

#ScribesAndMakers 5/6. Ghoti (fish) is a word created to demonstrate the odd pronunciation variations in the English language. Create a word of your own or share one you've created. So many. In the Patterners' World there are entire classes of creatures with "ancient names": kichek (ridable lizard thing), sikechak (bat like, comes in sizes up to f-ing enormous), nachak (like T-Rex), tekrak (rocket-propelled flying cabbage - no, really), xililik (nobody knows, used as an insult). There are rules for how the words are constructed. Most races have a name ending in "-lin" like Shocalin (otter-like), Ustecalin (ambulant fish people), Miralin (mer-folk). #writing #writingCommunity
