#ohjelmointi #github #codeberg

Everyone loves jeering at vibecoded #GitHub being down all the time. Yet for some reason people still neglect to question making #Microsoft the primary guarantor of their software's supply chain #security. And the whole attestation nonsense that doesn't really protect against the most likely attack vectors.

@thunderbird@mastodon.online @ryanleesipes@mastodon.social

hello, am reporting this here in fedi coz your #github pages are a complete mystery to me. most of the other #FOSS projects i use, which have githubs, are easy to locate & then easy to open new Issues… but apparently not #thunderbird … afaict there’s 100 pages here, https://github.com/search?q=thunderbird&ref=opensearch&type=repositories&p=1, which is impossible to efficiently navigate. 🤯

afaict the #linux desktop version of :thunderbird: TB 150, including 150.0.1, have some pretty serious regressions that severely reduce its usability. atm, afaict, these are broken:

  • i can no longer convert any Task to an Event; the context menu item is greyed-out inactive – see pics 1 & 2
  • i can no longer adjust any options for the Today Pane; the context menu items are greyed-out inactive – see pic 3

can you pls confirm if these bugs are known, & being fixed? thx.

ps: i found these apparent bugs in my many-years-old TB profile, but have tested also in a clean virgin profile, & the pics are of that.

Seriously considering a switch from #GitHub to #Codeberg after reading the post below, but I'm not sure I have the energy for it. https://dbushell.com/2026/04/29/github-is-sinking/ https://kevquirk.com/2026-04-29-1655

Many moons ago, owncloud split from #nextcloud and I went with Nextcloud. Before that happened, though, apparently I created an account on the owncloud discourse forums. Recently they floated the idea of shutting down the discourse and moving to GitHub discussions. That’s right: a product firmly rooted in #selfhosting is thinking about using the cloud instead. They asked for comments and I apparently had just enough reputation (read: >0) to be invited to comment. One of the questions they asked is effectively “what are we giving up?” My reply was “availability”. #GitHub availability is so bad they don’t even share the numbers any more. It’s something like 87.8% for the last 90 days. To put that in context: if a web site can run at 99.0% availability for 11 months out of the year, then shut down and turn off entirely for the month of February, they would have 91.4% uptime for the year (by my reckoning). Anybody running in their garage can do better than that! So how is moving to GitHub anything but a step down? And an irrational step at that.

Apparently I have 75 million PRs to review today... gonna be here a while. #GitHub you're drunk, take your CoPilot and Go Home.

GitHub CLI introduces default telemetry collection GitHub CLI collects telemetry data to analyze the usage of agent tools. hey "haha github uptime lol" and all that but this is serious: some pull request merges were completely mangled yesterday and the repo may not be in the state that its maintainers expect. If your project processed any updates yesterday, please double-check https://www.githubstatus.com/incidents/zsg1lk7w13cf #github

I'm 100% out of ideas. Our servers cannot handle the load the AI/LLM web scraping bots place on #GitLab. #Radicle is turning out to still not be ready for prime-time. I refuse to use #GitHub beyond being a read-only mirror. Self-hosting our code repos is an absolute requirement in order to provide higher levels of OPSEC than what third-party hosted services can provide. So, at the hands of our oligarchic overlords, is this the death of HardenedBSD? Someone please provide me ideas. I have no idea what to try next and I'm desperate.

⚠️ Github CLI now has telemetry spyware built in:

https://cli.github.com/telemetry

They’re shifting the burden onto users by requiring YOU to opt out, instead of making it opt in.

Run gh config set telemetry disabled to disable it.

The #gitea developers concluded after 10 years that it is not able to host its own development and that they depend on #GitHub. https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/issues/1029#issuecomment-4269181192 At the same time, the community fork @forgejo@floss.social is self-hosted for a long time and is also powering the popular @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de and at least 8 other public instances. So this seem to be a good time to migrate if you haven't already. https://forgejo.org
