#NewZealand New Zealand, which attracts millions of tourists each year with its pristine nature and spectacular landscapes, is facing a legal challenge over "magical thinking" in its climate promises. After unravelling a string of green policies since it came to power in 2023, the right-leaning government is accused of relying too heavily on unproven future technologies to meet its legally binding carbon emission targets https://www.caledonianrecord.com/news/national/court-case-challenges-new-zealands-magical-thinking-climate-plans/article_b85da2ca-67ec-521b-b9cd-55d27581bf61.html #ClimateChange #pollution #environment #climate

While Washington guts every protection that ever restrained a corporation, a Green Party MP in Wellington walks into parliament and says: a whale is a person. The Tohorā Oranga Bill would grant Pacific whales freedom of movement, habitat restoration, protected social structures. 22% of New Zealand's marine mammals face extinction. https://twp.ai/9OV23c #Nature #Law #WhalePersonhood #NewZealand #IndigenousRights #TohorāOranga #EnvironmentalLaw #PacificOcean #Conservation #lgbtqia #trans

#Linux #CloudStorage in #NewZealand or elsewhere? https://securecloud.nz/ NZ$13/TB month seems the average going rate (I am thinking Wasabi's pricing is in USD and is basically the same). I think initially I don't require more than 100GB initially and #SecureCloud comes in at NZ$3/month for this which seems very reasonable.

New Zealand High Court Rules Against National Super Fund for Inconsistent Application of Ethical Criteria | BDS Movement (2026-04-29) https://bdsmovement.net/news/New-Zealand-National-Super-Fund-Ethical-Criteria ——— >> The High Court of New Zealand, in a recent ruling, found the policy referenced by the New Zealand Superannuation Fund (NZ Super) in defense of its investments in companies complicit in Israel’s international crimes to be “unreasonable and unlawful.” The Guardians of the Fund failed their statutory duty to invest in a manner consistent with “avoiding prejudice to New Zealand’s reputation as a responsible member of the world community,” the Court declared, thereby underscoring “internationalism” as the source of the Fund’s duties to adhere to the standards of ethical investment. Crucially, the Fund was consequently ordered to reformulate its investment policy… #PalestineSolidarityNetworkAotearoa #NZSuper #BDS #NewZealand #EconomyOfGenocide #palestine @palestine@lemmy.ml @palestine@fedibird.com

BOOM! South Australia's power prices have plummeted as they near 100% renewables, proving to the world that relying on wind and solar with battery back-up is possible, more reliable and costs people less. THIS is how we avoid the next oil crisis. #EnergyRevolution #solar #renewables #australia #makeoilhistory #auspol #NZPol #NewZealand #iran https://www.newscientist.com/article/2514985-this-states-power-prices-are-plummeting-as-it-nears-100-renewables/?utm_source=nickofnz&utm_medium=nickofnz

bing news | Unpacking Peter Thiel's big bet on solar-powered cow collars | TechCrunch Founders Fund, famous for backing “zero‑to‑one” companies such as Facebook, SpaceX and Palantir, has placed its latest bet on a New Zealand startup called Halter. Halter builds solar‑powered smart collars that let ranchers manage cattle spread across remote terrain without dogs, horses, motorbikes or helicopters. By creating virtual fences that can be set and moved from a smartphone app, the system promises a practical solution to a massive, unsolved problem in pasture‑based farming. The collars emit audio and vibration cues that cattle learn to obey, effectively “herding” them without physical barriers. Because the devices are always on, they continuously collect behavioral data, monitor health, track fertility cycles and flag illness, giving farmers unprecedented insight into each animal. Founder and CEO Craig Piggott, who grew up on a dairy farm in New Zealand and previously worked at Rocket Lab, has spent nine years refining the hardware—now on its fifth generation—and regularly pushes software updates to improve reliability and functionality. Today the collars are attached to more than a million cattle across 2,000 farms in New Zealand, Australia and the United States, boosting land productivity by up to 20 % and, in some cases, doubling outputs. Halter’s approach stands out in a sector where many ag‑tech startups struggle to gain traction, largely because it delivers a clear financial ROI and maintains “nine‑nines” reliability. With roughly $400 million raised, the company is expanding globally, eyeing the billion‑plus cattle that still lack virtual fencing, while competitors such as Merck’s Vence or drone‑based solutions remain peripheral to Halter’s core collar technology. I came across a Kaka using its sharp pointy beak to get in under the bark of this tree. They do this to get at the larvae of wood-boring insects. Found on Ulva Island, just off Stewart Island Rakiura, last week. #Birds #WildlifePhotography #NaturePhotography #UlvaIsland #Aotearoa #NewZealand #Kaka
