5 canopy bridges were installed each with a camera trap, carefully positioned after surveys of #orangutan nests, forest cover & animal movement. The structures were designed to support the orangutan’s weight—no small feat for the world’s largest tree‑dwelling mammal. The program is closely monitored, with camera traps on every bridge & regular patrols to prevent forest encroachment. Conservationists hope more #orangutans will follow the first pioneer. #SumatraOrangutan #conservation #wildlife

#EmperorPenguins were already considered near threatened due to the loss of #coastal #SeaIce, which they rely on for raising chicks. Early ice breakup can lead to colonies falling into the ocean before chicks grow their waterproof feathers, causing the hatchlings to drown.  There are less than 600,000 adult emperor penguins left in the wild, & new projections suggest that the population could fall to half that by the 2080s, acc/to the International Union for the #Conservation of #Nature [#IUCN].

Not from fish splashing or canoes gliding, but from the long suction pipes of the dredging machines, pulling up the lagoon bed and spitting out wet sand that will be used in the construction of high-rise blocks, housing estates and flyovers. Sand dredging is regulated by the Lagos state government and the waterways authority but in a city of more than 20 million people, where sharp sand has never been in higher demand, not all dredging is being done by the book. The Guardian | Experience: I climbed the tallest tropical tree in the world by Jamiluddin Jami It was a slow ascent: I needed to check for wasps, snakes and scorpions I was born in Tawau, a Malaysian city on the island of Borneo, and grew up around logging camps – my dad worked in the industry. In the early 90s, a lot of the forest here started being cleared for commercial use. At the time, I just thought that was the way things were. That changed when I began working in conservation as a teenager at the South East Asia Rainforest Research Partnership in the nearby Danum Valley. My job was to plant seedlings in places where the forest had been cut down. I began to learn about the importance of keeping the forest safe. Continue reading...
