The Tennessee Valley Authority Produced a Booklet Downplaying Coal Ash Risks. Top Researchers Call it ‘Dishonest.’  | tldr the TVA is telling its customers coal ash is as harmless as garden soil 🤢

And I saw this on the same day I saw this article about conspiracy theories around the increasing number and range of ticks - because ticks are getting more common and more widespread because of climate change, but if you’re a loyal conservative, and you believe climate change is a hoax because all the people you trust are telling you it’s a hoax, there must be some evil conspiracy spreading those ticks, right? And I’m thinking about how the fucking capitalists (because the TVA is a federally owned utility company) are telling people that coal and oil are safe and healthy and aren’t hurting anybody or anything. And how, when we go back to '60s level of smog and yellow domes over our cities, and cancer rates skyrocket from the coal ash blanketing towns, people aren’t going to believe the TVA lied to them - they’re going to believe some evil left wing conspiracy is poisoning them. Probably fluoride and vaccines. Not clean coal and renewable natural gas, no sir, I’m a loyal American, and I love my coal burning power plant! Create a crisis, blame your enemies for the crisis, convince the people to support your policies to fix the crisis, your policies cause more crises, repeat. I cannot believe how long that strategy has been working. The American people are not fit to govern themselves.

EU, France help North-central Vietnam strengthen resilience to climate threats

cross-posted from: mander.xyz/post/52114552 Supported by the EU, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the four provinces Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, the initiative addresses the urgent need to protect vulnerable populations from escalating climate threats. Crucially, a €5 million ($5.82 million) grant from the EU ensures that the project goes beyond simply “grey” infrastructure. This funding transformed the initiative into a comprehensive, people centred resilience initiative. In line with the EU’s Global Gateway strategy and its commitment to high-impact, sustainable development, this initiative has provided local engineers, urban planners, and community leaders with the hands-on training and advanced tools needed to effectively manage flood risks and operate modern wastewater systems long into the future. … The impact of these efforts is tangible. As the physical construction phase continues, the initiative is on track to improve flood safety for 116,000 residents, keeping streets navigable, businesses open, and homes dry during severe storms. Furthermore, over 110,000 people will gain critical access to modern wastewater treatment, significantly improving public sanitation, reducing waterborne diseases, and restoring local environmental health. … “This project reflects the strong and growing partnership between Vietnam and Europe in addressing shared global challenges, particularly climate resilience and sustainable urban development. The tangible benefits it brings to our people – from improved flood protection to reliable wastewater services – demonstrate how international cooperation can directly improve lives, safeguard public health, and build a more secure future for our communities,” [said Nguyen Cao Son, Vice Chairman of the Ninh Binh Provincial People’s Committee]. …

What the US Would Lose If It Eliminates the National Center for Atmospheric Research

“I think there’s a great loss for the wrong reasons. There’s no good reason for dismantling this or tearing it down,” a former NASA chief scientist says.

How a ‘Model’ for Climate Migration Became a Cautionary Tale

The residents of Isle de Jean Charles in Louisiana found safety after moving to higher ground. But the experience left some of them warning others facing relocation: ‘Don’t do it.’ What needs to be done better is to give people a lot more power and control over how things are done for them. Not just do it for them at the lowest bid.

Germany's coal exit quietly progressing, likely completed by 2032 – researcher

cross-posted from: mander.xyz/post/52096709 Germany’s coal phase-out is on track to happen through market forces well before the legal 2038 deadline, regardless of current energy market turbulence, says Hauke Hermann, a researcher at the Institute of Applied Ecology (Öko-Institut). Carbon price trends make an exit as early as 2031 or 2032 likely, Hermann told Clean Energy Wire. Refiring old coal plants in response to the Iran war’s energy market shock to cut power costs would distort investment signals and is unlikely to happen in practice, he added. Soaring energy prices have triggered calls for slowing Germany’s coal exit. The country’s coal exit law, agreed in 2020, provides for the step-by-step decommissioning of coal power plants. It also stipulates that coal-fired power generation must cease by 2038 at the very latest. Germany’s western coal region aims for an earlier phase-out by 2030, but delays in building new gas-fired power plants as a backup for renewables make meeting this earlier deadline increasingly unlikely. …

China Produces More Coal Than the Rest of the World Combined

China accounts for over half of global coal production. Just six countries produce nearly 90% of the world’s coal. Asia dominates both total output and recent production growth. China produces more coal than all nations combined. According to the 2025 Statistical Review of World Energy, China produced 4.78 billion tonnes of coal in 2024, accounting for 51.7% of the global total. Coal production is also highly concentrated beyond China. The top six producing countries, including India, Indonesia, and the U.S., together account for 87% of total supply. … India ranks second at just over 1 billion tonnes, but its 11.7% share is far behind China’s majority. The top six is rounded out by Indonesia (9.0%), the United States (5.0%), Australia (5.0%), and Russia (4.6%), after which production drops off sharply. … Web Archive link
