Nothing shows the complete lack of moral fiber of politcians in the UK and US more than the fact that neither our putatively conservative nor our putatively liberal politicians have any answer to the moment in which we find ourselves—which is the utter and complete failure of #neoliberalism and #neofeudalism—other than to excoriate those of us on the acual left who have reasonable guidance and leadership to offer, allowing fascism to outflank us all on the extreme right. #USpol #UKpol

Politics is Applied Morality. Put simply, more than a half century of #neoliberalism and #neofeudalism has swung the balance of our societies too far toward hierarchy and authority and too far away from equality and liberty, and successfully tarred and feathered any attempt by the left to right the ship of state and of society and civilisation from its dangerously reactionary listing as an evil socialist/communist/totalitarian/antisemitic plot, in the minds of the electorate. #USpol #UKpol

Election blether Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
Ooh, just noticed something that I missed when I was crossing everything that Reform wouldn't make it to second place in the Scottish Parliament. The Conservatives LOST more seats than Reform GAINED. In 2021 Conservatives got 31 seats, and sat as the official opposition. Yesterday the two combined got 29. I look forward to reading the many news articles about the (far too) slow decline of right wing political parties in Scotland. #UKPol #ScotPol #UKPolitics

@PGBeattie@mastodonapp.uk That, certainly. But the collapse of the Labour vote from people who were utterly unable to vote Tory until they changed their clothes. If Starmer stays the Labour Party goes the same way and probably first. #ukpol

Just spent five minutes thinking about the pendulum swing of government policies being tied to the general election cycle, and how party strategists definitely plan how far they can inflict pain on voters to appease the oligarchs and the City, and when to hand voters a lollipop to make them forget two years of making their lives worse, and how, from a Westminster perspective, local councils are too small to matter, so two years of R****m control doesn’t matter to them, and now I feel even bleaker. Abuser behaviour, if you ask me. I did it in your best interests, here’s a lollipop. #ukpol

"You won’t be able to move this weekend for commentators gravely intoning that #Starmer lacks a vision for government. What they won’t say is that he eschewed any vision to get into government. His very lack of politics is how he became politically successful. It was the essential precondition for him to be judged by the right wing papers and others as no threat" #UKPol #UKLabour https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/may/06/labour-wipeout-adults-in-the-room-con-job-keir-starmer-elections

#KemiBadenoch says that the #UK was built on #FossilFuels. But #Ecotricity founder #DaleVince dismisses Bad Enoch's fantasy. He says that the UK was "built on slavery, on racism, on colonialism, on Empire. We abused the rest of the world to be a rich country" Dale Vince is of course entirely right. So his comments should be commonplace and unworthy of sharing. But the UK has never de-imperialised. So Dale is on his own. 😡 #ukpol #BritishEmpire #colonialism #slavery #racism #imperialism

"Expanding age verification will entrench the dominance of large tech companies and harm small and volunteer-run services who may not be able to afford to comply.” The UK must address structural causes of online harms like "surveillance-driven advertising models and the dominance of a small number of Big Tech platforms." 🗣️ ORG's @JamesBaker@social.openrightsgroup.org on the statement from 19 organisations. https://www.neowin.net/news/tech-giants-and-civil-rights-groups-warn-uks-age-verification-plan-threatens-the-open-web/ #ageverification #onlinesafety #privacy #ukpolitics #ukpol

UK policymakers need to rethink online safety laws. A new joint statement warns that age-gating and access restrictions threaten to fragment the open Internet and erode the rights of all users. Reform UK Ltd has released a new policy (possibly illegal were it enacted). "In order to deport all illegal migrants in Britain, a Reform government will build detention capacity for at least 24,000 illegal migrants at a time. They will not be able to leave the detention centres, and be held for a short period while they await deportation." They plan to place "detention centres" in constituencies that vote Green. They're evil, and this policy is shameful. #UKpol https://votegreengetillegals.com/

A week old but can’t stop thinking about the healthy life expectancy stats (Healthy life expectancy trends in the UK: a watershed moment.) 90% of local authority areas have a healthy life expectancy below the state pension age (in 10% it’s below 55). Combined that with the constant whine that people should be in work, not on health-related benefits, and we’re back to the bad old days when you worked until you were broken. The difference now is that, because overall life expectancy has improved, it’s ’work until you are broken, then spend longer being miserable and ill’. For many data like these are abstract, too far in the future to matter. But it is all part of a depressing mood music, another indication that optimism is just a British way to say delusion. #UKPol
