I hate NixOS but I love NixOS.
So i wrote a Blogpost to explain.
And no it is not just "i can never leave NixOS"
it is actual critique and i am probably gonna leave NixOS

System engineer from Switzerland. Currently interested in #NixOS, #Emacs, #Python and #metal. In my job I work a lot with #Ansible. At home I’m hosting various services on my old laptop running #NixOS.

I really like my #wireguard setup.
I'm moving more and more services behind it and don't expose them anymore.
In addition I've setup #pihole again and move as much as possible from my #pfsense firewall to my #nixos server.
It just feels better to have things set up declaratively instead of relying on backups.

I try to set up a #nixos host with a #simple-nixos-mailserver and #publicinbox and test the whole thing with a nixos VM test.
But I fail hard to get the very basics working - right now making public-inbox behind a nginx reverse proxy available (curl'ing the site returns 404).
Has someone done this before and some nix code I can look at?

Today on the joys of my new laptop: it seems the CMOS battery is death on arrival.
Which means when I keep the computer in a sleep state that drains battery to the point of it shutting down, I get the very strange experience of the BIOS going back to default settings, with Secure Boot being re-enabled and me being unable to boot because I got rid of Windows.
Strangely, all of the secure boot fields in the AMI (🤮) bios are greyed out, and randomly turning it off and back on, adding and removing admin (so BIOS access) and user (so PC booting permission) passwords and then removing them....

Okay, this is weird.
I am seeing tailscaled spiking up to 250% CPU usage every other minute, with up to 60 MBit/s outgoing traffic on the tailscale0 interface… and on the wg0 interface I see the same amount of traffic during that period.
I now disabled wireguard and the issue is gone.
But I have absolutely NO idea why this is happening, what causes it, and why it (seemingly) suddenly started - I did not have this issue earlier today. All I did in between was update the unstable channel, but all packages involved here (tailscale, wireguard) are from stable. So… 🤔 I am at loss…

I just broke my clavicle over the weekend. I need a solid recommendation for a voice to text tool on #Linux. I basically need to be able to dictate into any text field in any application. Currently running #nixos but can easily run a flatpak or app image. Mixed results with Handy so far. I’ll be testing the ones I find, but I’m interested in a recommendation at this point.
