#DarkSideOfTheUniverse documentary is a fascinating look at dark matter and dark energy in the universe. Now I want to learn about #ParticlePhysics. #astronomy #physics #science

Our greatest window into the #universe is nearing completion. This soon-to-be #telescope is located at the top of Cerro #Armazones, the mountain that casts a triangular shadow. At 3046 metres above sea level, and with very dry conditions, the #ELT is in the perfect location for astronomical observations under one of the most pristine skies on Earth. Its dome, planned to be fully completed in 2027, protects the telescope and its sensitive components from the extreme desert environment, and from the Sun during daytime. At night, its two massive sliding doors will open to allow the telescope to observe the night sky, while still protecting it from the wind. #astronomy https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2617a/

This is a hard one for me to catch, but I got lucky last month and was able to capture more data that I combined with some data from May 2025. Rho Ophiuchi is one of my favorite nebulae. It’s so colorful in broadband; no filters necessary. I wish it wasn’t so close to the horizon for me. #astronomy #astrophotography

Astronomers pin down the origins of a planetary odd couple New measurements of a hot Jupiter and its mini-Neptune companion suggest both planets formed surprisingly far away from their host star. by Jennifer Chu https://news.mit.edu/2026/astronomers-pin-down-origins-planetary-odd-couple-0505 astronomy at PG: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/bookshelf/101 #Books #Science #Astronomy

My new dream team is finally complete. The Harmonic Drive Mount Warpastron WD-20P paired with the Berlebach Astro Tripod UNI 18. Let the games begin — now all we need are clear skies. #astrophotography #stargazing #deepsky #astronomy #nightsky

#paperday on #astroph "The Impact of the Magnetised Cosmic Web on Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Propagation" by Allegra Firinu, myself and Carmelo Evoli. We investigated the role of realistic extragalactic magnetic fields in deflecting E>1e18eV cosmic rays, effectively creating "an horizon" beyond which particles cannot reach us, as they are trapped by magnetic fields. https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.02324 #cosmoMAG #astrophysics #astronomy #physics

Happy #MayThe4th ! Here's a photo I took at @esoastronomy@mastodon.social 's Paranal Observatory in #Chile, with one of our 8-m telescopes aiming its four lasers at the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small galaxy orbiting the Milky Way. The lasers excite sodium atoms high up in the atmosphere, creating artificial "stars" whose twinkle we can measure in real time to correct atmospheric turbulence and get super sharp images. This is how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_QC2cLroDc #StarWars #StarWarsDay #astronomy #space

Over 70% complete, our ELT is glowing in the #sunset light of the Atacama Desert in #Chile, surrounded by massive cranes hard at work to get this telescope up and running. With the first light planned for the end of the decade, the ELT and its groundbreaking 39-metre main mirror will take on some of the biggest challenges in #astronomy and, ultimately, help us understand our place in the #Universe. Messier 3. A globular cluster containing about 500,000 stars. It doesn’t have a cool “common name” and I find that sad. That means we get to name it, right? I propose Globby McGlobface. Submissions are open until May 8th. I’ll publish the best one in my very unscientific journal. 📷 Sony a7 IV, Z61 II, 2 hours. #Astrophotography #Space #Astronomy 🔭

Hubble vs. My Backyard's Scope! First of all, happy B'day Hubble Space Telescope! Still the OG space-based telescope that changed our perspective of the Universe. For the B'day, NASA/ESA released an image of a section of the Trifid Nebula (left). You can see a nodule from inside the nebula and a thin stellar jet formed by a young stellar object buried inside the cloud. That's about 0.75 light-years in length. On the right is my 1-hour photo from my backyard - and the jet appears there too! Unlike Hubble, my backyard rig only has a 20cm aperture and has a whole lot of atmosphere, as well as city lights, to deal with. So it is really neat to be able to get that level of detail in 1 hour of observing. See the original Hubble image here: https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Hubble_turns_36_with_a_dazzling_Trifid_Nebula_portrait #TrifidNebula #Astrophotography #Science #Hubble #Astronomy #Astrodon

This isn't a scene from Star Wars. What you're looking at is the Tarantual Nebula, and those beams come from the lasers installed on the telescopes of our Very Large Telescope Interferometer in #Chile. They create artificial stars 90 km above the ground to correct atmospheric turbulence, allowing the VLTI to observe faint targets. But why are four telescopes observing the same target? Find out: https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2616a/ 📷 A. Berdeu/ESO #astrodon #astronomy #astrophysics #space #science

A hellish world: Planet TOI-561 b, slightly larger than Earth, orbits an ancient, sunlike star so closely that a "year" lasts just 11 hours and its surface is lava. Yet somehow it has a thick atmosphere, hinting at how old, battered planets might rejuvenate themselves. https://eos.org/articles/a-lava-world-unexpectedly-hosts-an-atmosphere #science #nature #astronomy
