Imagine being a scientist, and being told that your mere presence in a facility would alter the crystals being grown, that no joke you cannot step foot inside: Scientists who had been exposed to Form II in the past seemingly contaminated entire manufacturing plants by their presence, probably because they carried over microscopic seed crystals of the new polymorph Fact, not fiction! In materials science, a disappearing polymorph is a form of a crystal structure (a morph) that is suddenly unable to be produced, instead transforming into a different crystal structure with the same chemical composition (a polymorph) during nucleation and points for being airborne! In a few cases, such as progesterone and paroxetine hydrochloride, the disappearance gradually spread across the world, and it is suspected that it is because Earth's atmosphere has over time become permeated with tiny seed crystals https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearing_polymorph #science #TIL #crystals

#TIL that in the 90s, several countries in Europe and Asia introduced cordless telephone systems that were an interim between home cordless phones and cellular devices. They used a home hotspot, and there would be some hotspots in public places like train stations and some roads, but the phones would have coverage through the pager service when out and about, and the user would go find a hotspot to dial in and check their messages when they got a notification. Really intriguing, I'd never heard of anything like that before! Ringway Manchester — I Can’t Figure Out These Strange Radio Devices. They Don't Exist! https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=feQnb6FyUmo https://invidious.nerdvpn.de/watch?v=feQnb6FyUmo https://yewtu.be/watch?v=feQnb6FyUmo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feQnb6FyUmo

RE: @cark@social.tchncs.de

#TIL You can copy or rename files without retyping the path:

❯ cp /your/long/path/config.toml{,.bak}

This expands to:

cp /your/long/path/config.toml /your/long/path/config.bak

Works also with echo (nice for testing).

Thanks to @irom@social.tchncs.de for recently pointing me in this direction. 👍️

#bash #linux #cli

Quoting
CarK :python: @cark@social.tchncs.de

In bash you can create multiple (nested) directories with a single compact line:

❯ mkdir -p a/{b,c/{x,y},d/{e,f}}

❯ tree
.
└── a
├── b
├── c
│    ├── x
│   └── y
└── d
├── e
└── f

Lovely Peeps! Your cool #history for the day! 🚀 (You might want to watch with sound off. The music has words & I found it difficult to hear the music, read the text, AND focus on the signing.) If you want to just enjoy the signing, the full text is within this post. 😊 "Everyone’s talking about Artemis II. The first humans to travel to the moon in 50 years. Historic mission. But nobody’s talking about the #Deaf men who made it possible. In the late 1950s, #NASA had a problem. They needed to understand what weightlessness does to the human body. But every test subject kept getting violently motion sick. So they came to #Gallaudet. Eleven Deaf men. Most of them had lost their hearing to spinal meningitis as children, which also damaged their vestibular system. Their inner ears couldn’t be overwhelmed. They were immune to motion sickness. NASA put them in centrifuges. Zero-gravity flights. A rotating room for twelve straight days. One experiment on a ferry in choppy Nova Scotia waters. The researchers got so seasick they had to cancel it. The Gallaudet Eleven? They were playing cards. Their bodies gave NASA the data it needed to send humans into space. No #Gallaudet_Eleven — no Mercury. No Mercury — no Apollo. No Apollo — no Artemis II. Sixty years later, four astronauts just flew 252,000 miles from Earth & came home safely. They stood on the shoulders of eleven Deaf men most people have never heard of. Now you know!" #Artemis2 #ASL #History #TIL #Nyle_di_Marco

TIL the subsequent fires that broke out in San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake, destroying 80% of the city, was due not only to ruptured gas lines, but also because people were firing their own buildings after realizing insurance wouldn’t cover damages from an earthquake. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906_San_Francisco_earthquake #til #todayilearned https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/1sizhyw/til_the_subsequent_fires_that_broke_out_in_san/

reading docs is helpful -- during today's short look at #Python docs, I discovered that as of 3.14 functools.partial() may take placeholders: this makes it possible to pre-fill any positional argument with a call to partial(); without Placeholder, only the chosen number of leading positional arguments can be pre-filled. #Python #TIL https://docs.python.org/3/library/functools.html#functools.Placeholder

@kuba@toot.kuba-orlik.name pisał o petycji o wprowadzenie graficznego symbolu złotego (@kuba@toot.kuba-orlik.name), a ja dziś odkryłem, że komputery #Mazovia miały symbol złotego!
