News Headlines | AI cannot replace authentic human connection - Archbishop AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Archbishop Eamon Martin, the Catholic Primate of All Ireland, warned that artificial intelligence must never replace authentic human connection, urging that Christian communication remain rooted in human dignity and personal encounter rather than the efficiency of technology. Speaking on the Church’s 60th World Day of Social Communications, he echoed Pope Leo III’s call to “preserve human voices and faces” in the digital age, cautioning that AI’s ability to copy voices, create faces and generate seemingly human words risks reducing people to mere “content” or “data” and can undermine truth, conscience and meaningful interaction. Martin appealed to parents to guide young people in using technology without losing real conversation and called for stronger resistance to disinformation, manipulation and the dehumanisation of opponents. He noted that Archbishop John McDowell of the Church of Ireland has raised similar concerns, emphasizing that efficiency should not become the primary value by which information is judged. The Guardian | Wealth of Britain’s 157 billionaires now equal to 22% of country’s GDP by Amelia Hill AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Britain’s 157 billionaires now control just under £670 billion—more than 22 percent of the nation’s GDP—a five‑fold increase since 1990 that the Equality Trust labels “ghost GDP” to illustrate how headline economic growth is increasingly disconnected from everyday life. While politicians point to rising GDP as evidence of a thriving economy, analysts such as Priya Sahni‑Nicholas and economist Gabriel Zucman argue that macro‑level indicators no longer reflect income gains for most people, citing the surge in wealth among the super‑rich and corporate tax‑avoidance tactics that inflate growth figures. The data show that the richest 50 families now possess more wealth than the poorest 34 million Britons combined, and that workers have endured the longest pay squeeze in living memory, highlighting a widening gap between wealth creation and broad‑based prosperity. RE: https://mastodon.social/@joshgotfried/116532946187490174 Hey folks, Josh is a friend of mine here in Ireland who’s looking for an internship (paid, ideally). He knows his stuff (he grokked Kitten in a few minutes as I was demoing it to him and actually found and reported a bug that same evening) and he cares about working on tech that matters. If we had the funds, I’d hire him in a second. He’d be a valuable addition to any team. Please feel free to reply to this or directly to him + I’d appreciate it if you boosted this for reach. Thanks! 💕 #ireland #internship #getFediHired #tech

#movie #Ireland Much of the plot of land that was used in the hit movie The Field has been washed away through climate change. Storm Éowyn, which lashed Ireland in January of last year, ate into the land close to Leenane on the Galway-Mayo border along the Erriff River, resulting in large chunks of earth being swept into the river and on out to sea https://extra.ie/2026/05/04/news/the-field-is-washed-away #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #ClimateInstability #MassAtrocity #pollution #ecology #environment #climate

#Ireland Northern Ireland is facing a growing threat from wildfires as conditions are becoming more favourable, according to a new report. "We show that #climate litigation can lead to the implementation of significant policy changes. The paper concludes by arguing that with each successful climate case taken against a state, the corpus of international jurisprudence grows and reverberates, creating a ‘domino effect’ in climate litigation. Each judgment adds to the resource base of case law that can be cited in the future, serving to intensify the pressure on policymakers." https://www.iiea.com/publications/taking-governments-to-court/ #publicLaw #Ireland #NL #Germany

🇮🇪🚍 The National Transport Authority has announced that Route 310 in #Limerick will be operated by Bus Éireann under a new contract from Monday, 20 April 2026. Passengers can continue to use Leap Cards and free travel passes, while cash payments will also be accepted on board from the start date. Standard adult fares will be €1.90 in cash or €1.35 with a Leap Card. The route will be adjusted to serve the new Bloodmill Road extension, improving links to residential and employment areas. 🇮🇪💳🚌 Passengers using TFI Local Link bus services in Kerry, #Ireland can now pay fares with contactless debit or credit cards, as well as mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. The National #Transport Authority said the move simplifies payments and offers greater convenience for rural and regional travellers. The rollout follows a successful pilot in Cavan and Monaghan and expansion to several other areas, reflecting strong passenger demand. Contactless is currently available for single journeys, while daily and weekly fares remain available via Leap cards and online services. Cash and Free Travel Cards are still accepted. The NTA said the upgrade is part of wider efforts to modernise public transport and improve accessibility, with local managers welcoming the added flexibility and improved passenger experience. https://www.transportforireland.ie/news/passengers-on-tfi-local-link-kerry-services-can-now-use-contactless-card-payments/
