In the distance, the Tynemouth Pier and lighthouse where the waters of Tyne meet the North Sea.
Always reminds me of one of the scenes in the film adaptation of the BBC TV comedy series 'The Likely Lads'.
Aware that some reading this might be a bit too young to have been around when the series was aired on TV and never seen the film, the storyline generally follows the lives and friendship of two young working class men, Terry Collier (James Bolam) and Bob Ferris (Rodney Bewes).
In the movie adaptation, there is a scene filmed on the pier where Bob and Terry are chatting about the future direction of their lives.
Bob turns to Terry and memorably remarks: "In the chocolate box of life, he top layer's already gone."
He briefly pauses, then adds: "And someone's pinched the orange creme from the bottom!"

🏗️🛤️ Contracts have been signed to restore passenger rail services to #Portishead and Pill for the first time since 1964, marking a major milestone for the long-awaited scheme. Two new stations and around three miles of track will be built, with construction now under way and services expected to begin in winter 2028/29. The project, involving Morgan Sindall, Colas Rail and AmcoGiffen, will reconnect more than 50,000 people to the rail network. Backers say it will improve access to jobs, education and services while supporting economic growth across the West of #England. The line is also expected to cut travel times to #Bristol and ease road congestion. Funded by the Department for Transport and local authorities, the scheme is seen as a key step in strengthening regional transport links and encouraging sustainable development.

It will give local leaders powers and funding to expand contactless “tap-and-go” travel across #buses, #trains and #trams, building on systems in cities such as #London and #Nottingham. The plan includes over 40 commitments, alongside measures to keep travel affordable, such as fare caps and fuel duty freezes. A new partnership with Google will provide real-time bus tracking via Google Maps, particularly benefiting rural areas. Other initiatives include a £6 million Peak District pilot to better link buses and trains, and expansion of a national parking platform to simplify payments. The strategy also provides £40 million for local transport technology trials and new guidance to help councils deliver joined-up networks.
