Hantavirus: the outbreak ship is in Tenerife; protected passenger transfer is being initiated. The cruise ship Hondius, where a hantavirus outbreak occurred, arrived around 7 a.m. this morning at the port of Granadilla, in southern Tenerife, the Spanish island. More than 100 passengers and part of the crew will be disembarked and transferred to healthcare facilities. The rest of the crew will instead continue the voyage to the Netherlands. Tenerife authorities prevented the ship from docking at the port, although tents were set up on the dock for reception. It will remain in port until passengers and seafarers are disembarked, between today and tomorrow. Special flights will await to take them home. There are passengers and crew from 23 different countries on board. As health protocol operations begin, the organized trip from the Arctic to Antarctica by the Dutch company Oceanwide Expeditions ends. A luxury cruise – cabin prices between €16,000 and €25,000 – for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts, with three deaths, two of which occurred on board, at least five other passengers infected and various possible infections with the previously little-known virus outside Argentina. #Tenerife #Hondius #Granadilla #Spanish #Netherlands #Arctic #Antarctica #Dutch #Argentina https://www.iltempo.it/esteri/2026/05/10/news/hantavirus-nave-da-crociera-focolaio-tenerife-trasferimento-protetto-passeggeri-47654830/

#Antarctica Driven in part by fears that the frozen landscapes of Antarctica may be irreversibly melting away because of climate change, tourism to the bottom of the world is soaring. And experts warn that with more visitors comes an increased risk of contamination, illness and other damage to the continent https://www.wral.com/news/ap/a618a-antarcticas-tourism-boom-raises-concerns-about-contamination-and-disease/ #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #ClimateInstability #MassAtrocity #pollution #ecology #environment #climate

@pheonix@hachyderm.io yeah… I mean, any kind of local distributor biz would've been fine. And I'm shure you'd even consider importing it yourself. But not selling there at all is just bad! It's worse than #Antarctica cuz #BAC / #NSF & @awi@helmholtz.social have logistics pipelines in place and worst-case just get it airdrop'd with a parachute and tracker on from a flyby-plane or helicopter if they can't manage to put it in the next scheduled shipment heading close-by…

Now that I am retired from my decades-long career as my Ad Agency's Creative Director, graphic designer, etc., I do not get the opportunity to do much in this space. So I'm having a ball helping a friend prepare his presentation he will give 3/2 to my #EAA chapter on the three tours he spent as an Air Traffic Controller in #Antarctica. Harsh conditions, and no alternate if an #airplane got all the way into his airspace, low on fuel or facing +WX. Land on the ice runway or die trying. avgeeks

Leaving Antarctica with computers full of data, notebooks full of notes + numbers and just about as much kit as we brought (+ some waste for correct disposal). Travelling out via the gobsmacking #WhiteDesert. #Antarctica, you've been wonderful, who knows when we'll meet again... #iQ2300

#Christchurch in New Zealand is important for the exploration of #Antarctica . The International Antarctic Centre is a base facility for Antarctica exploration and it has a very good museum. #NewZealand https://backpackandsnorkel.com/Christchurch/#antarctic
