現代生物的系統分類架構與其說是繼承林奈,不如說使用林奈所推廣的規則,嚴格來說學界對林奈的推崇,紀念意義大於科學貢獻。另一方面布豐對林奈的批判中,最重要的就是林奈沒有解釋每個分類階層的規範準則。然而布豐的系統也沒有高明到哪裡去,只是思想內涵中的演化觀念遠遠領先那個時代的主流知識。《萬物的名字》的作者傑森羅伯茲顯然對林奈的評價更低,或許他有意平反布豐應有的學術地位,並指出林奈過譽的部分。其中我喜歡他指出林奈為學上高超的直覺天賦,以及不明所以的散漫,卻對此表現尷尬的傲慢。林奈的洞見與規則之所以可用,來自敏銳精準的植物觀察,以及一部份誤打誤撞。相形之下布豐才是更嚴謹專注的學者,但因法國大革命時期的立場,而缺乏打磨開發論述的機會。我非常期待作者後續對其思想的爬梳與展開。
某種程度來說,我們在用布豐的方法修補林奈漏洞百出的標籤。而現代的內共生、平行轉移、生態功能群等演化機制,也早就掏空主流架構的地基。只是使用的人太多,很難原地重建,也沒社群有足夠的能力與話語權改變習慣的科學語言。
