Taru sormusten herrasta on fantasiaklassikko, joka lapsuudessa Hobitin ohella sysäsi portista fantasiamaailmoihin. Kun 10-vuotiaana vielä pääsi mukaan Keski-Maa roolipeliä pelaamaan, täyttyi nuoruus monilta osin Keski-Maassa vietetystä ajasta hyvien ystävien parissa, joista sittemmin yksi tuli hyvinkin läheiseksi ja tätä vuonna yhteistä taivalta tulee jo 26 vuotta täyteen - ja matkat Keski-Maassa jatkuvat yhä.
Viimeksi luin Sormusten herran 10 vuotta sitten iltasatuna lapselle ja tarttuessani kirjaan nyt uuden painoksen myötä odotin pääasiassa nk. turvakulttuuria. Se on jotain, mihin voi kadota, uppoutua ja saapua kuin turvasatamaan keskellä maailman melskeitä, joita valitettavasti tuntuu nyt riittävän.
Mutta kirja ei tuntunut enää samalta kuin ennen. Tuo oli ensimmäinen ajatus, kun olin ehtinyt Rivendellin laaksoon asti. Eikä se ole tuntunut juuri muuallakaan: ei Raurosin putouksilla, ei Rohanin ruohotasangoilla, eikä Valkoisen kaupungin kaduilla. Se oli paljon suoraviivaisempi kuin muistin! Tapahtumat tuntuivat etenevän pikakelauksella. Helmin syvänteen taistelu? Viuh vauh.
Onko kirja huonompi kuin ennen? Ei. Mutta viimeiset eletyt 10 vuotta näkyvät ja heijastuvat takaisin arvaamattomasti, sillä 10 vuodessa on ehtinyt tapahtua paljon. On ollut äärimmäisiä tunteita, iloa, surua ja burnoutin jättämät jäljet. Ehkä jokin viisaus on siinäkin, että hobitteja pidetään täysi-ikäisinä, kun he täyttävät 35 vuotta. Nuorena ajattelin, että mitä pöhköä, mutta näin ikäpyykin ylittäneenä ajatus on lähinnä: "Aaa. Joo. Totta."
Eniten herkistyin lukiessani Éowynistä, joka on Galadrielin ohella kirjan harvoja vahvoja naishahmoja. Éowynin suru on riipivää, mutta aktivoivaa. Lamaannus ja masennus olisivat yleensä seuraus kaikesta koetusta, mutta Éowyn kääntää sen päättäväisyydeksi ja rohkeudeksi, joka äärimmilleen vietynä lähentelee itsetuhoisuutta sodan melskeissä. Aragornin ja Éowynin kohtaaminen Dunhargissa oli itselle jotenkin merkittävä vedenjakaja, joka sai pohtimaan surun viisautta.
Moni kuulemma lukee tämän joka vuosi uudelleen, mutta ehkä annan uinua seuraavat 10 vuotta jälleen, kun Keski-Maassa tulee muutenkin seikkailtua. Roolipeli olisikin sitten jo oman postauksen paikka!

Just finished reading The Voice of Saruman chapter in LOTR The Two Towers.
I genuinely loved that chapter. Like, Saruman is clearly evil, but there was things he said where I audibly laughed:
“Will I come down?” he mocked. “Does an unarmed man come down to speak with robbers out of doors?”
Like, that felt like a very visceral real conversation between two old friends. Absolutely love the writing.

Reading The Two Towers after watching the extended edition. I have to say I'm enjoying LOTR so much now that I have some mental context for the characters in the book. I actually understand what is going on now!
(I got a bit lost in Book 2 of Fellowship of the Rings, and coincidentally I forgot the second half of the extended version...)

After 15 months of hard work, my dad has finished this impressive model of Minas Tirith! It is 1.4 m high and entirely hand-made out of wood. One of the most time-consuming parts was manually engraving the bricks on all walls and buildings, but this was key to properly convey the huge size of the city.
