‘Being human helps’: despite rise of AI is there still hope for Europe’s translators? A booming tech sector has disrupted translation jobs in publishing – but they could be needed for a while longer yet In February 2022, while he was plugging away at rendering the US writer Dana Spiotta’s novel Wayward into French, the literary translator Yoann Gentric decided he needed a bit of light relief. He would test whether AI could put him out of work. Gentric had been grappling with a short non-verbal sentence that described the book’s protagonist’s feelings upon opening a window: “Bright, sharp night air, bracing.” He put the prompt into DeepL, a neural-network-powered machine translation engine that regularly outperforms Google Translate in… https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/may/08/being-human-helps-despite-rise-of-ai-is-there-still-hope-for-europes-translators #AIartificialintelligence #Publishing #Europe #Languages #Books

Someone asked me what my favourite word is in the various languages I speak. What a delightful question! So I'm turning it over to you: What is one of your favourite words in the languages you speak? #Language #Languages #AskFedi

In many Chinese families it’s pretty common for people to talk to each other in completely different languages. My New York aunt speaks to me in Mandarin / Hokkien. She speaks to her husband in Toishanese. They speak Cantonese to other people. We all sort of understand each other when we are speaking different languages, but respond in our own language. From time to time we might dip into another language to illustrate a point. My grandma used to call this ‘chicken and duck talk’ #Languages #Chinese

I found this reply that I made in 1984 to Dennis Ritchie in the net.followup newsgroup. I was at the time lobbying Sun to add 8-bit character set support to the firmware, but they wanted to hold out for a 16-bit system, like the as yet unnamed Unicode. There was eventually an interim solution but my memory of that is a bit foggy. #Usenet #DennisRitchie #C #Pascal #emacs #VT100 #charactersets #languages #Swedish #programming #unicode #SunMicrosystems #Värmland

For our new members. In every post, you have the option to set the language in which your post is written. This is an important feature. People can set which languages they want to see. If you set the wrong language, the post will be hidden from people who could read it. In addition, the translation function needs this information, because otherwise your post cannot be translated. #languages #translation #mastodon #introductionary
