Aldhelm was already growing on me, but this is awesome: (from wikipedia) "He was now an old man, but he showed great activity in his new functions [as bishop]. This included going into public places where he would sing hymns and passages from the gospels interspersed with bits of clowning to draw attention to his message. RE: https://fedihum.org/@avstockhausen/116517608028738836 This is the manuscript reading software I've been searching for (and trying to help make) for 5 years -- not just bleed through, but easily adjustable image enhancement generally. FOR FREE If you remember the late, great Retro Reveal, it's like that but 100 times better. #histodons @histodons@fedigroups.social @medievodons@fedigroups.social

Very early #OnThisDay, 30 April 1944, New Zealander Nancy Wake parachutes into occupied France to be a courier for the Special Operations Executive. The British SOE supported French Resistance to Nazi occupation. Couriers like Wake would take messages and materials such as explosives, guns or grenades around the patch their network covered. Nick-named 'the white mouse' by the Gestapo, she's never captured. She died in 2011. #WomenInHistory #OTD #History #WomensHistory #WorldWar2 #Histodons

#OnThisDay, 11 Feb 1989, the Rev Barbara Harris is consecrated, the first woman to become a Bishop in the worldwide Anglican Communion. Due to death threats, she was advised to wear a bulletproof vest at the ceremony: she declined. "I certainly don't want to be one of the boys. I want to offer my peculiar gifts as a black woman... a sensitivity and an awareness that comes out of more than a passing acquaintance with oppression." #WomenInHistory #OTD #History #BlackHistoryMonth #Histodons
