Master Slave Husband Wife The 2024 Pulitzer Prize winner for Biography by Ilyon Woo that tells the story of Ellen & William Craft + their escape from slavery in 1848 Georgia. Ellen, whose father was a white plantation owner was enslaved by her half sister, working as a seamstress + house servant. William, her husband, worked as a hired out carpenter for his master. Ellen who was extremely light skinned disguised herself as a wealthy southern planter while William portrayed her slave in order to make their escape. The 1st half of this book is a gripping tale - the 2nd half however looses the thread as Ellen + William travel to England - their story gets lost amid the politics + the stories of other abolitionist who help them on their journey. #masterslavehusbandwife #ellencraft #williamcraft #africanamericanhistory #abolitionists #americanhistory #blackhistory #booklist #mybookshelf #books #pulitzerprize #biography

May 4, 1970. Four students killed at Kent State. May 4, 1886. Haymarket. May 4, 1626. Peter Minuit "purchased" Manhattan — the founding fraud. The dead are watching, and they are not impressed. We remember not as ceremony but as muscle memory. The body knows the sound of a federal letter the way a deer knows a footstep. https://twp.ai/9OV23i #History #KentState #Haymarket #May4 #Memory #Protest #StudentMovement #NeverForget #AmericanHistory #lgbtqia #trans

12,000-year-old elk hide, sewn with hand-spun cord, found in an Oregon cave. Likely the world's oldest known sewing. Our nan claims she's been at it just as long. 🧵 Dry caves preserve everything. Ancient humans were extraordinary. What do you reckon they were making? https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/these-12000-year-old-scraps-of-elk-hide-may-be-the-worlds-oldest-known-examaples-of-sewing-180988200/ #caving #history #americanhistory #ancienthumans #archaeology

#OnThisDay, 30 Jan 1913, Ida B Wells forms the Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago, Illinois, to give a voice to Black women who had been excluded by national suffrage organisations because of their race. In March 1913, the club headed to Washington DC to take part in the national Women’s Suffrage Procession. They were told to march at the back, in a segregated section, so as not to upset white southern women. #WomenInHistory #OTD #History #WomensHistory #AmericanHistory #Histodons 1/2
