L'Unità: Flotilla, l’ONU a Israele: “Liberi subito gli attivisti”
Le Nazioni Unite hanno chiesto a Israele di rilasciare immediatamente due attivisti fermati durante l’abbordaggio in acque internazionali delle imbarcazioni della Freedom Sumud Flotilla sollecitando anche un’indagine su “preoccupanti testimonianze” di gravi maltrattamenti. Il cittadino spagnolo Saif Abukeshek e l’attivista brasiliano Thiago Avila erano tra le decine di persone a bordo di una flottiglia che tentava di portare aiuti a Gaza, quando è stata intercettata dalle forze israeliane in acque internazionali vicino a Creta giovedì scorso. I due si trovano detenuti in un carcere ad Ashkelon, nel sud di Israele.
“Israele deve rilasciare immediatamente e senza condizioni i membri della Global Sumud Flotilla, Saif Abu Keshek e Thiago Avila, arrestati in acque internazionali e trasferiti in Israele, dove sono ancora detenuti senza accuse”, ha dichiarato il portavoce dell’ufficio diritti umani dell’Onu, Thameen Al-Kheetan. “Non è un crimine mostrare solidarietà e tentare di portare aiuti umanitari alla popolazione palestinese di Gaza, che ne ha un disperato bisogno.” Le imbarcazioni della flottiglia erano salpate da Francia, Spagna e Italia con l’obiettivo di consegnare aiuti umanitari. I rappresentanti dei due attivisti accusano le autorità israeliane di averli maltrattati; entrambi sono in sciopero della fame da sei giorni.
Al-Kheetan ha denunciato le “preoccupanti testimonianze di gravi maltrattamenti”, chiedendo un’indagine e sottolineando che “i responsabili devono essere assicurati alla giustizia”. “Chiediamo la fine dell’uso da parte di Israele della detenzione arbitraria e di una legislazione antiterrorismo ampia e vaga, incompatibile con il diritto internazionale dei diritti umani”, ha aggiunto. “Israele deve inoltre porre fine al blocco di Gaza e consentire e facilitare l’ingresso di aiuti umanitari nella Striscia palestinese assediata, in quantità sufficienti.” Il tribunale di Ashkelon ha approvato una proroga di sei giorni della detenzione dei due attivisti della Global Sumud Flotilla, accogliendo la richiesta della polizia israeliana. Lo riporta il sito di Haaretz spiegando che i due restano in carcere almeno fino a domenica.

The United Nations has called on Israel to immediately release two activists detained during the boarding of ships of the Freedom Sumud Flotilla in international waters, also requesting an investigation into “concerning testimonies” of serious abuse. Spanish citizen Saif Abukeshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila were among the dozens on board a flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza when it was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters near Crete last Thursday. “Israel must immediately and unconditionally release the members of the Global Sumud Flotilla, Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Avila, arrested in international waters and transferred to Israel, where they remain detained without charges,” said the spokesperson for the UN Office on Human Rights, Thameen Al-Kheetan. “It is not a crime to show solidarity and attempt to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population of Gaza, which desperately needs it.” The ships of the flotilla set sail from France, Spain and Italy with the goal of delivering humanitarian aid. Representatives of the two activists accuse Israeli authorities of mistreating them; both have been on a hunger strike for six days.
Al-Kheetan denounced the “concerning testimonies of serious abuse,” requesting an investigation and emphasizing that “those responsible must be brought to justice.” “We demand an end to Israel’s use of arbitrary detention and a broad and vague anti-terrorism legislation, incompatible with international law on human rights,” he added. “Israel must also end the blockade of Gaza and allow and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestinian territory, in sufficient quantities.” The Ashkelon court approved a six-day extension of the detention of the two Global Sumud Flotilla activists, accepting the request of the Israeli police. Haaretz reports this, explaining that the two remain in custody at least until Sunday.
