Okay, if this is real, this is worse than I was expecting. I've been thinking about secondary outputs but I've been thinking way more about plastics, inks, other secondaries. I have been worried about products shortages but maybe not enough. I am and have been assuming that there will be preferential distribution to corporations (which obviously includes most freight) and least preference given to individuals trying to do their own work themselves - e.g., like RAM over the last several months. But I haven't thought about the price side of that. And holy shit it's gonna get fugly. So, uh, yeah. Maybe buy an ebike. Oil market's close for the weekend. No boats crossing the usual strait channels yet, but looks like a lot of boats are lining up to try it from the Persian Gulf. It seems reasonable to me that crews trapped in the Gulf would be more willing to risk the uncertainty than those waiting around outside. #oil #OilPrice #IranWar #Ceasefire #StraitOfHormuz

Okay, oil seems to hate settled in for now at a $6/barrel jump following the shitstain's verbal squirts - at least for the moment. This is as aftermarket as you get for oil, really, so reactions can be either muted or exaggerated - but a jump like this at this time of day is a bike yikes under any circumstances #oil #OilPrice #economy #iran #war #FuckTrump #FuckTheGOP #FuckRepublcians #fascism

Just want to talk about this briefly: The oil market doesn't close during the week. Not actually. There's a "close of day" each day which functions as a checkpoint, but it really stays open. It does, however, close for the weekend. This is the first weekend close over $100 in this whole Iran mess. And if you look at the checkpoints, it's also the first _checkpoint_ over $100 during this time. There's been intra-day trading higher, but not a checkpoint or an actual market close. And that's going to be staring people in the face over the entire weekend. Particularly in Europe, which is North Sea rather than West Texas, and even more expensive, at $106.29. And that's before real shortages. We haven't hit that yet. Slovenia made noise for starting to ration fuel purchases a few days ago, but that's not about pure supply, that's about keeping a lid on gas-price tourism within the EU. So we don't have shortages yet. But as strategic reserves draw down, eventually there simply won't be enough oil to meet current demand, at which point only a few things can happen, all of which simplify down to demand destruction. Marketwatch this morning report that overnight's reversal - a stunning leap in oil prices followed by a dramatic drop to merely a significant rise in oil prices - was in fact triggered by reminders of strategic oil reserves held across the G7, which led immediately to talk of _releases_ of oil by those reserves, even though none have been announced. And that stemmed the panic. For context, check earlier in this thread, or for more context, here's a five-day chart. _Discussions_, apparently. Or a global recession play. Don't know. Or Asian markets locking in as much supply as they can and getting done making certain guarantees. Persian Gulf goes lots of places but a _lot_ of it goes to eastern Asia. I'm looking for news to trigger this reversal but not seeing it. #economics #economy #oil #OilPrice
