A lovely 12th-century illuminated capital today. I think the expression and the body language of the woman on the left are absolutely priceless. #mediaeval #marginalia

A slightly unusual one today, partly because it's a full page, and partly because it's in English. This is a lovely 12th-century page from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales". #mediaeval #marginalia

I am not happy with my ability to draw oxen. So I take courage from this 11th-century artist, who I reckon was in general pretty good, but when it came to drawing the legs of the oxen at the back of the picture, they went "nah, that's just going to look confusing". #mediaeval #marginalia

There are mediaeval medical textbooks; this isn't one of them. This is just a random illustration showing a doctor treating someone's ear. Plus obligatory dragon... er... dinosaur... er... blue reptile sort of thing. #mediaeval #marginalia

It's the snail that really gets me about this image. I mean, it's fairly bizarre to start with, but the snail takes the weird to a whole new level. #mediaeval #marginalia

This is basically the mediaeval version of my cleric protagonist, Nivaunel. When confronting evil, she doesn't lose her cool. She just punches. Hard. #mediaeval #marginalia #writing

Some mediaeval art is extraordinarily good. This isn't. I could do a better job. Nonetheless, I think you might enjoy the whimsy anyway. #mediaeval #marginalia

The next in the marginalia series, and a personal favourite. This is what you did in mediaeval times if you needed a wheelchair. (From the Luttrell Psalter.) #mediaeval #marginalia #disability

I think I'm going to do an occasional mediaeval marginalia series for your entertainment and diversion. Let's start with this one. It's from the Maastricht Psalter (14th century), and it proves that cats never change! #cats #spinning #mediaeval #marginalia
