Hoy es #viernesdeescritorio y como no tengo la laptop cerca para compartir el actual va uno viejito que usaba allá por el 2009: Gnome 2 en Ubuntu ¿9.10?, se ve una ventana de terminal, Firefox con el foro "Espacio Linux" abierto, y a la derecha y al fondo un Conky mostrando datos del sistema. Não acho que há muito o que fazer, sobretudo pela bússola de parte da comunidade de código aberto, que rejeita código gerado por IA e impõe uma fatura impagável para quem julga que os ecossistemas existentes não atendem. O incentivo para desviar da trajetória atual parece extremamente baixo, logo, não há escala comunitária viável.
Quem quer outras formas de computação e a valorização de desktops e handhelds permitindo que o operador faça mais do que malabarismos descritivos ou a rendição de dados em nuvens opacas (com imenso overhead devido às más práticas de programação que surgiram pela abundância de capacidades dos hardwares), ou arregaça as mangas, mesmo que dependendo de um ou mais LLMs, ou vai precisar comer vidro com soluções comunitárias capengas e/ou capturadas por grandes corporações.
Mesmo no mundo do software livre, parece bastante claro que o desktop virou um elemento secundário, subserviente ao navegador e que a diversidade de possibilidades tem sido empobrecida, uma vez que não há massa usuária suficientemente crítica para tanto.
Há cada vez menos alternativas ao #GNOME com aplicativos infantis e navegadores glutões. Funciona para a maioria, mas é tacanho e burro.

Achei a ideia do #PocketTerm35 da #Waveshare interessante, apesar da ausência de um #trackball, mas a tela de 640x480, apesar de teoricamente adequada, reforça o retrocesso acumulado ao longo de décadas: apesar de todo o blá, blá, blá sobre convergência e dispositivos móveis, a realidade é outra, com desktop environments pesados demais para rodar em SBCs com 1 GB ou 2 GB de RAM (as poucas especificações minimamente acessíveis nos dias de hoje) e, em geral, pouca oferta de software convergente para algo além de relógios, cronômetros e calendários.
O #GNOME, por exemplo, ainda tem problemas para exibir a grade de aplicativos a 720p, caso o scaling seja de 125% ou maior para tornar a leitura mais fácil em tela pequenas (o que, na prática, reduz a resolução) e, em linhas gerais, parece muito pouco testado para cenários do tipo. E, claro, o GNOME não é exatamente o tipo de ambiente gráfico que você vai rodar num dispositivo, seja ARM, seja x86, com 1 GB ou 2 GB de RAM.
Mesmo aplicativos mais antigos e fora dos holofotes, como #Abiword e #Gnumeric realisticamente esperam 800x600 de resolução. É compreensível, mas problemático. Simplesmente não temos quase nada que rode em 640x480.

1/3 The #GNOME developers make a lot of very dumb decisions and never allow their users to push back.
Normally I wouldn't care since I don't use their environment, but unfortunately, some of the decisions impact GTK apps, including the idea of trashing decades of GUI expectations by changing scrollbar behavior.
All desktop environments since Xerox Star have scrollbars that when you click below/above the nib, it moves by screenful.
The GTK team changed this sane default for no reason.

Yo maybe I'm late to the party but is Dropline #GNOME abandoned? I know this was a popular way to install gnome on Slackware Linux at one point, but I see the forums are defunct and the latest install instructions are for Slackware 14.1.
I was interested mainly so I could document it, but maybe there is no good way to install GNOME on Slackware these days.

Q: Does GNOME 50 support systemd-homed?
A: No, GNOME doesn't support homed (yet!!)
Q: Did GNOME drop Xwayland support?
A: No, we only dropped the X11 session. You can still use X11 apps on GNOME

Leí que Emilcar en su Emilcar Daily Premium está planteándose reinstalar su Macbook Pro con ayuda de un LLM y pensé en hacer lo propio con la migración de #Gnome a #kdeplasma en mi laptop con Debian 13. Estoy usandolo para evaluar reemplazos de apps, asegurarme de configurar lo equivalente que tiene sentido y dejar el sistema limpio y óptimo. Por ahora va bien, veremos cómo resulta.
