❗️Spain urges EU to shield ICC, UN as Gaza genocide continues
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called on the European Commission on 6 May to activate the Anti-Coercion Instrument to protect the independence of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the UN, as well as their efforts to end the genocide in Gaza.
“We ask the Commission to activate the Anti-Coercion Instrument, to protect the independence of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations, and their actions to end the genocide in Gaza,” Sanchez said on X.
Sanchez said Spain would “not look the other way,” warning that punitive measures against those who defend international justice threaten the wider human rights system.
The Spanish premier added that the EU cannot remain a bystander “in the face of this persecution,” calling for a bloc-wide response to pressure targeting international legal bodies.
