Richard Nixon's hometown, Whittier, Calif., was once a conservative stronghold. Over the decades it transformed to a majority Latino city that reliably votes Democratic in state and national elections. But at the local level, it was GOP through and through. Until April, when organizers got to work in the community. "It was like we were slapped awake," says Angie Medina, who leads the Whittier Latino Coalition. After the Supreme Court's ruling last week on the Voting Rights Act, Tennessee Republicans have passed a map splitting up the state's lone majority-Black district. According to NBC, this puts them in a position to pick up a House seat in this fall's midterms and secure full control over the state's congressional delegation.
