Le autorità forestali nel centro dell’India stanno riportando un’importante vittoria per la biodiversità, contribuendo all’istituzione di una nuova popolazione di riproduzione del vulnerabile cervo di palude del suolo duro, un animale che fino a poco tempo fa era limitato a una sola area protetta. L’iniziativa, nota a livello globale, è stata documentata dal collaboratore Sneha Mahale per Mongabay India.
Un tempo diffuso in tutto il territorio indiano, il cervo di palude del suolo duro (Rucervus duvaucelii branderi) era appena arrivato a una popolazione isolata di circa 1.100 individui, confinata nel Kanha Tiger Reserve, nello stato di Madhya Pradesh. Questo scenario ha sollevato preoccupazioni tra gli esperti di conservazione a causa dei rischi associati all’isolamento e alla piccola taglia della popolazione.

Forest authorities in central India are reporting a significant victory for biodiversity, contributing to the establishment of a new breeding population of the vulnerable hard ground swamp deer, an animal that until recently was limited to a single protected area. The initiative, known globally, has been documented by correspondent Sneha Mahale for Mongabay India.
Once widespread throughout India, the hard ground swamp deer (Rucervus duvaucelii branderi) had dwindled to a small, isolated population of approximately 1,100 individuals, confined to the Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh state. This scenario raised concerns among conservation experts due to the risks associated with isolation and the small size of the population.

The initiative, known as KehatiKu, encourages residents to record wildlife sightings in exchange for modest payments.
