Can confirm that TransPennine Express is the site to use to reserve seats (at no cost) in British long-distance trains, if you are using an #Interrail pass as your ticket. The ticket inspector won't check your reservation, but it is of course useful to make sure you have a seat especially as it doesn't cost anything. Ikuisuuskysymys: kannattaako hankkia Interrail-lippu vai tavallisia junalippuja?
Ratkaisin tämän nyt vihdoin omalla kohdallani, kun tartuin viime joulukuussa -25 %:n Interrail-lippu-tarjoukseen, ja olen nyt tässä viime päivät tutkinut junien aikatauluja ja hintoja. Edelliset 6 matkaa Tanskaan (2), Saksaan (2), Sloveniaan (1) ja Portugaliin (1) tuli kuljettua tavallisilla junalipuilla.
Kummassakin tapauksessa pitää olla aikaisin liikkeellä: Interrail-tarjouksia on syksyisin, ja tavalliset junaliput tulevat myyntiin useita kuukausia etukäteen, jolloin ne ovat edullisimmillaan.
Minun ja matkaseurueeni kohdalla vastaus olikin yllättävän helppo.
Koska haluamme joka tapauksessa suunnitella matkapäivät etukäteen mm. majoitusten varaamisen vuoksi, ja haluamme neljän hengen pöydänympäryspaikat lautapelaamisen vuoksi, *riittää että vertaa päivän aikana tarvittavien matkalippujen hintaa siihen laskennalliseen keskimääräiseen hintaan, joka yhdelle Interrail-päivälle tulisi*. Koska paikkavauksista pitää kummassakin skenaariossa maksaa sama hinta, niistä ei tarvitse tässä vertailussa välittää.
Eli, jos olisi hankkinut vaikka 380 €:n Interrail-lipun, jolla saa matkustaa 10 päivää, "yhden päivän" hinta on 38 €. Sitten katsotaan, maksavatko halutun päiväetapin matkaliput - ilman paikkavarauksia - enemmän vai vähemmän kuin 38 €. Tuon vertailun voi tehdä vaikka edellisen vuoden marraskuussa.
Kun nyt vasta näin myöhään katson hintoja - kuukautta ennen matkaa - on selvää, että IR-liput tulevat edullisemmaksi, ainakin tuolla päin Eurooppaa. Toisaalta tämä näin myöhään aktivoituminen on seurausta siitä, ettei näitä lippuja ja reittejä ole tarvinnut miettä aiemmin, IR-lippujen ansiosta.
Siinä yksi syy valita IR-liput: junien valintaa ei tarvitse tehdä useita kuukausia aikaisemmin. Jos on silloin esim muita kiireitä, kuten minulla on ollut.

And now a little back-and-forth trip on Avanti West Coast to enjoy lunch. Possibly both ways. Will probably not go all the way to Liverpool Lime Street (hi @biohumanisti@eliitin-some.fi ) before I turn back.
The UK is really an excellent country for travel with #Interrail First Class, with the complimentary #FreeStuff (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks) in First Class on several of the long-distance operators.

Nothing fancy on offer, just soft drinks or coffee. But nice and quiet.

On my way. First Helsinki–Stockholm–Malmö–Ystad–Bornholm, hiking, camping, and visiting relatives, Bornholm–…–Hamburg, COOL Days, Hamburg–…–Hoek van Holland–Harwich–…–London–Bridge of Orchy?, hiking and camping in Scotland. Rest of trip not planned, but should really visit Edinburgh, and have never been to Ireland so maybe there.
Will take the Highland portion of the Caledonian Sleeper (to Fort William), but haven’t decided yet where to get off. Rannoch? Corrour? Spean Bridge?
Hiking on the Rannoch Moor might be interesting. Or walking along the Caledonian Canal? Or more in the East, Cairngorms? Perhaps also Shetland. Will be using #Interrail.

Entered my 2019 #Interrail trip on @viaduct_world@mastodon.social . This trip was much in the east, I visited Lviv (not using the Interrail pass, obviously) and Istanbul. Had to take a bus Warszawa–Tallinn. Finally I also visited Abisko and Narvik.

Asking for suggestions where to go next on my #Interrail. Now in Étretat, Normandy. Somewhere reasonably close, where I can get by train (once I take the bus to Le Havre), and preferably without having to use a TGV. Planning to spend two nights there. Is Caen the obvious choice? Then I could visit the D-Day sites. Or Bayeux for the tapestry.
And then after that some other place in Northern France or Germany, also two nights.
The main boundary condition is that I have five travel days left and the last day of pass validity is the 12th, when I thus need to be in Stockholm.
(Yes, I did not manage to use this pass really optimally. In retrospect I should have used this 10-day pass in November–December, and the 7-day pass now in January–February. That is the less than ideal thing with flexi passes, you can end up with several travel days to use in a short time, if you want to avoid having to leave a few travel days unused. But it is what it is.)

In theory I could go to Ireland, I guess, and I have never been there so I definitely need to, same day. (Only been to NI, Belfast.) But wasn't it so that the train-ship connections are rubbish both at the French and Irish ends?
