Afternoon tea existed long before the scone, yet it’s hard to imagine the ritual without one. I grew up with scones at my grandmother’s tea table in Venezuela, a tradition brought over by my British family. Here’s the curious history of how the scone took over. #FoodHistory #FoodCulture #FoodHeritage #FoodStories #AfternoonTea #Scones https://foodculturebites.com/a-humble-scones-journey-to-stardom/

Salt Cod, and Green Wine: The History of Portuguese Food I have been eating Portuguese food long before I understood its history. When I visited Portugal I learned that salt cod, and vinho verde carry centuries of survival, and faith. From bacalhau preserved for the sea to convent desserts made with excess egg yolks, this cuisine is shaped by necessity and community. #FoodHistory #FoodCulture #FoodHeritage #FoodStories #PortugueseFood https://foodculturebites.com/the-history-of-portuguese-food/ #foodculturebites

Food shocker for today! Strawberries aren’t true berries. Bananas are! A true berry develops from one flower with one ovary and usually has seeds inside. • Bananas grow from a single flower with one ovary. • Strawberries don’t, each seed is on the outside and is its own tiny fruit. #botany #SurfFeeds #foodstories #fruit #FoodTrivia #foodculture

Food shocker for today! Strawberries aren’t true berries. Bananas are! #FoodTrivia Why? A true berry develops from one flower with one ovary and usually has seeds inside. •  Bananas grow from a single flower with one ovary. •  Strawberries don’t, each seed is on the outside and is its own tiny fruit, making strawberries an aggregate fruit. Botanically speaking… bananas win the berry title! Botanists, please way in! #botany #foodculture #foodstories #fruit

Delis make you think of family gatherings and community. These meeting points helped immigrants find their footing in second homes filled with familiar smells and language. Hand-sliced pastrami and warm knishes helped shape American culture reminding us of how food can make us feel at home. #FoodHistory #FoodCulture #FoodHeritage #FoodStories #Delis #DeliCounters#DeliCounters https://foodculturebites.com/how-delis-became-american-legends/ Posted from @surf@flipboard.social
