Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has condemned the detention of a Spanish activist by the Israeli occupation, describing it as an “illegal detention” and a “kidnapping” following the interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters.
Albares called for the immediate release of Saif Abu Keshek, who is currently under Israeli detention along with Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila.
The remarks came after the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that both activists were taken to the occupied Palestinian territories for questioning. The vessels were intercepted off the coast of Crete on Wednesday, with the remaining activists later released.
Speaking to Spanish RAC 1 radio, Albares said Keshek’s arrest amounted to an “illegal detention outside the jurisdiction of Israel,” insisting that he must be released immediately.
