@Broadfork@mastodon.green We are fortunate to have runner ducks in the ecosystem at our home. The runner ducks are the biggest forage animal that fits in with the vegetable gardens and native plantings. They are free ranging homebodies. Their contributions are many, foraging, pest control, manure, zen. #nodig, #ducksofmastadon

@Irisfreundin@troet.cafe @Broadfork@mastodon.green We put fencing around the lettuces to protect from rabbits and ducks. The runner ducks are relatively safe to predators during the daytime and in the building for overnight safety. The apex predators are raccoons in this area. The runner ducks have a lookout responsibility that overlaps with keeping the group together. #ducksofmastadon

@Broadfork@mastodon.green The May 5th compost report is eventful. Green manure clippings were harvested from the raspberry area, and spread on the compost. The compost temperature as we start is a few degrees warmer than the nodig garden. This is 63 F (17 C). The whole of the pile was flipped from right to left. The runner ducks help. The overnight lows are around freezing. #compost, #minnesota, #Zone4b, #ducksofmastadon,
